1G Ipod Mini

Ive aquired a dead 4gb Ipod Mini (1st gen).
History:
Was in a bag, and a bottle of water spilt. The ipod was laying in the water for a little while. Its now dead, and wont power up.
Ive stripped it down and all the internals are clean and no trace of sugary marks proving it was just water thats spilt. Its had a 3rd party battery that ive probed with a multimeter and its showing 0v. Reckon it may have survived the incident but destroyed its battery? Does anyone know if an ipod will run without its battery if its connected to a power source?
Does anyone have an Ipod mini that would be willing to either let me borrow their battery to test or willing to test my battery?

Sorted.
Removed the battery and tried it in the car. New 1000mah battery ordered.
