360 bricked?
on: October 11, 2008, 15:35:34 PM
I had to tempt fate by complaining how my 1st gen 360 hadnt died and been replaced by a later gen console by MS didnt I?

The problem is, Im not getting any ring of light. Turn TV on...turn console on, the console starts to boot up with the 360 logo, but within a second or two a weird checker-box pattern freezes on the screen, and if I turned the console on via controller, the controller turns off and the ring of light stays unlit.

Does this with and without a disc in the drive. Any suggestions? initial troubleshooting searches are turning stuff up on the red ring of light, but I have none of that so dont know what to do. Am guessing its borked. What are my chances if I contact MS, considering its about 3 years old now.

Picture of frozen screen to follow.

Spoke too soon. Pulled the power cable out and left it for 10 secs. Turned it on and it seems to be fine?!?!

Any ideas what might have caused this?

Had that happen to one of mine and not too long after I got the RROD. You are still under warrenty for an RROD fault for about another month and a half if you got it on the release back in 2005.

I will have to check with dad when he got it. I dont think it was on release, could only be 2.5 years old perhaps, as I remember him getting it 10 days before my first year exams >< So thatd be May 2006

Looking at the MS warranty I will need to get it to display 3 RRODs heh, I bet it does 1,2 or 4...

Yeah - expect audio and video glitchs over the next week and then RRoD.
It's all fun and games until a 200' robot dinosaur shows up and trashes Neo-Tokyo… Again.

Just got off the phone with MS. (Turns out I didnt register the console when we got it, so the website wouldnt let me register it online as it was built and bought in 2006...)

after maybe 3-4 mins waiting it was a fairly painless process. Blatently indian call centre going on but at least she was understandable and helpful. Guttingly though they only want the console, without the HDD. Does this mean that Im likely to get the console back, fixed...or a new console minus the HDD. Would be sweet if they send a whole new unit complete with bigger HDD, though I dont think Ill be able to transfer my saved games across. Bit lame as GoW2 has unlockables for people who have played and completed GoW1...

Youll get the same console back, itll just be repaired. Mine got the RROD for the second time a few months ago and I received pretty much the same console back, but they had replaced the motherboard and DVD drive. The drive was quieter, and I think the motherboard may be using the newer chipset although they didnt replace it with one that has an HDMI port on it (although thats no big deal as the one I sent didnt either).

You only need to send the unit in, no cables, no hdd, no controllers, no psu, etc as its the graphics chip that is borked. If you send it with the hdd attached you may end up receiving a console back without the hdd.

Does anyone know what the actual issue with the 360s was that causes such an epic case of consoles breaking? You say its the gfx chip...overheating?bad wiring?

Basically, the solder on the graphics chip gets too hot and melts, allowing the chip to move which kills the graphics.
