Accessing an XP PC on a network
on: February 13, 2007, 16:34:13 PM
Right,

Ive just formatted and installed a third party unattended version of XP on my downstairs desktop which acts as a file server.

Problem 1: For some reason it doesnt appear on the on the network in Network Places nor on my Xbox (original XBMC).

It is one the network, it can be pingd and accessed using \\computer in Explorer.

Problem 2: It asks for a user name and password when you try to access it (I dont want to have to use a password)

Things Ive checked:

Workgroup is correct.

Admin Tools > Local Security Settings >  Local > Security
Guest Account Status: Enabled

Admin Tools > Local Security Settings >  Local > User Rights
Deny Access to this computer from the Network: Removed Guest

So; I just want the computer to be on the network, visible and freely accessible by anyone on the network.

Anyone got any ideas?

Have you actually shared a file/folder yet ? Does the "Everyone" user have access to the share ?

Is Folder/File Sharing allowed through the (XP) firewall ?

Done that, needed to to get Red Alert 2 working :)

I do have a folder shared with full permissions.

I can get to the folders fine using \\computer its just not visible when I browse network places (and I have to use a password).

Its one of those Google to death problems;

Quote
Cant see any or only some computers in My Network Places

Symptoms: you can map the remote computers shared folder, but you are experiencing the following issues:
1. Cant see any or some computers in My Network Places.
2. It takes long time to show networking computers in My Network Places.
3. The networking computers show in My Network Places randomly.

Resolutions: this is likely Computer Browser issue.
1.  If there is a multi-homed or RAS machine on your network becoming the browse master for the wrong subnet, disable the Computer Browser service on the computer.
2. Check any errors in Event Viewer, especially Browser error. If you have peer to peer workgroup network, you may want to disable Computer Browser services on w2k/xp.
3. If you cant disable the Computer Browser service because the compute is the PDC, you can unbind NetBIOS from one interface in network advanced settings.
4. W2K/XP may not show on the My Network Places if it doesnt use Windows Logon Passwords or has blank password.

Ive made no progress at all with this. Im accessing it from all PCs using the \\ method and typing the password and I still cant get to it from the xbox.

Not sure exactly how to go about this? It has an IP assigned fine by DHCP, and connects to the internet and other computers on the network fine.

I think when I can be bothered Ill reinstall a normal windows version.

windows networking is balls :(

but on a side note..... install bulletproof ftp or simmilar..... transferring files around a network is MUCH better using FTP :-)

you can easily resume a file, or a queue, and you can easily check everything copied over fine (by enabling auto skip file when file exists etc...)

Try assigning a static IP rather than letting the DHCP do it. Sometimes solves this problem at work.
