Anyone know the dims of the ATI HD4850?
on: June 26, 2008, 11:07:04 AM
I want to buy one but its going in the Antec Fusion, the HD3870 i had fitted in it ok but it was a bit of a fiddle putting in the power connector.

The other thing stopping me is i would prefer a duel slot cooler so the hot air blows out the back of my case. I could buy a 3rd party cooler i suppose, can anybody recommend a good one that isnt like a jet engine?

Ta

I cant think of a decent rear-venter other than just getting a 4870, and enjoying the higher speeds.

Or you could get a Zalman ZF-1000 or a Thermalake HR-03 gt [which will both fit the 4850[and cool it far better than the stock or 4870 coolers[OC potential in here]]] and mount a fan on the unused PCI slot cover things on the back of the case [Ive never been one for technical terms...]

Im trying to talk myself out of a 4870 as i dont really need the power, however my mobo isnt XFire so it would be a better idea in the long run :ptu:

If i went for the 4870 i would leave the stock cooler on it but put some AS5 or such on it, that seems to drop the temps by 10 deg or so.

Cheers.

Edit: just checked the power requirements for a 4870 and im gonna be really pushing it with the antecs stock 420 psu.

That is a bit tight...you could underclock it if you dont need the performance, that should lower the power drain.

Or how about, dont buy one....

Whats the point in underclocking a 4870..

Yeah i thinks its a safer bet to go for the 4850 tbh.

Ill bite the bullit and get one of the single slot jobbies and see how it goes, i can always look at third party cooling solutions at a later date.

Who knows it might be fine.

Thanks for your input guys

as i understand it the 4850 and 4870 cards are both the same size.

My 4850 cooks itself when in bios [got no Windows yet], but the amount of hot air coming out of it is minimal. It stabilises around the mid 70s idle. So long as you have a decent airflow through your case you should be fine. Remember to remove the expansion slot cover below the one tha card needs to aid the removal of hot air. And dont touch it when its in use  :drama:

Also, by the looks of things a 3rd party cooler like I mentioned earlier drops the idle temps in the 4850 to around 30 degrees, and at that its possible to OC it to near-4870 speeds.
