I think youre all missing the point. Its not about using the newest or most innovative technology; its about bringing something a bit different to the normal, everyday household. I always use the laptop or netbook to check my e-mails, do a bit of surfing and suchlike whilst sat on the sofa, if I need to google something or check the TV guide, something like that. And its a pain to turn it on and have to deal with either a small screen and small keyboard or something that is incredibly uncomfortable to loaf around with.

Tablets like this a great for bringing the web downstairs as laptops and netbooks are just too fiddly and fussy to be bothered with half of the time. Whilst I wont be picking up the iPad Ill certainly be picking up one of the Windows based alternatives sometime this year.

I see a use for it in my life because its more intuitive, natural, fun and far more comfortable than using a laptop to do exactly the same thing. You guys may not see a use for it and may harp on about it using old technology that has been around for years, but I guarantee it will fly off the shelves and be a future classic like the iPod and iPhone simply on the basis that it enters the collective conciousness of many more people than the less mainstream alternatives.

I agree, i can see its use as a coffee table device. But im not sure that justifies the price nor makes up for its omissions and failings.

It was touted as a revolution by the hype, its not a revolution, the reason being it doesnt make life any simpler. It doesnt replace existing devices, its just another device that does the same thing.

It will sell well because Apple have priced it well (depending on its UK price) but it wont compare to the ipod and iphone sales success.

How long before an interface is made that streams the digital programme planner for your tv to the iPad or whatever it is you use so rather than having to use the fiddly remote controls, you have a touch interface like on phones with the ability to tap in and out of things and scroll by sliding your finger across the screen. THAT would be an instant use, and pretty much guartantee a niche market for the most expensive TV remote...

Sounds a bit like this

I think thats a great idea, would be possible as well, except for the fact the iPad doesnt have an IR port.
Getting the tv guide is easy enough from EPGs then you could just emulate IR button presses to get the set top box to change channel.

A more integrated model would require cooperation from the TV/set top box manufacturers which have so far seemed slow to integrate new technologies.

I still dont know why set top boxes dont integrate network media players. All the hardware is there already.

I must be being thick but what possible use are the cheaper ones without 3G? Is there wifi on these?

If they dont have either then its a bloody expensive digital photo frame tbh.

Yeh, wifi and bluetooth on all models.

Its a media player, ebook reader, web browser, email client, App playing device with a nice interface and long battery life (apparently).

No multitasking ... at all.
No flash.
No USB.
No proper OS (iphone 3.2)
No built in stand.
No keyboard.
Not small enought to carry every day.
Not powerful enough to take on holiday.
No 3G on cheaper models.

No thanks.

its been rushed through because of the popularity of the iphone/itouch & somthing to pitch up against Amazon kindle

No, it is a label media have put on it. It is to get into the market after the announcement by PC based vendors of tablets coming out soon and to pip them at the post. Acer, HP and a couple of others look very apple like, very nice, windows based and come with a hell of a lot more and all multi-touch as well.

except both dell & HP have beaten them to a release date

book reader, film viewer, music player, etc, etc.

Also should be compatible with most, if not all, the apps in the Apple store. So its got at least one Word Processor, database and spreadsheet available.

The ones with the Nvidia Tegra 2 chip will be better by a mile as long as they look nice and a good size.
