Apple Tablet
on: January 27, 2010, 10:56:11 AM
Tablets have always been crap imo, the screens always get grubby and theyve always been a pain to use with Windows ...if Apple could bang one out for £400-500 itd be worth it but £800-1000 for a fancy web browsing machine is rubbish.

I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

Im interested to see what audience these are targeting. I cant really see a gap, possibly portable media/ebook but i dont think the battery will be long enough and the screen too big.

Whatever it is it will sell like hotcakes and be heralded as the best invention ever.

Bet its £500+ for a base model

Ive had a Fujitsu Tablet PC for work, and while useful it wasnt really much cop to use off the stand it sat on while I was in the office.

Tablet PCs have been around for YEARS, and TBH they arent much good for anything beyond stock-taking and some specialist purposes.

forget the iPhone comparisons, I cant find any mentions of using it for calls.  So what we have is an oversized iPod Touch.  Wonderful, at least itll make it even easier to spot the self-important twats.

Prices for the iPad, a touchscreen tablet computer unveiled by Apple on Wednesday,
will start at $499 and the new device will start shipping worldwide in 60 days, the company said.

The "iPad will be available in late March worldwide for a suggested retail price of 499 dollars for the 16GB (gigabyte) model,
599 dollars for the 32GB model,
699 dollars for the 64GB model," an Apple statement said.

"The Wi-Fi + 3G models of iPad will be available in April in the US and selected countries
for a suggested retail price of 629 dollars for the 16GB model,
729 dollars for the 32GB model and
829 dollars for the 64GB model."

If they do manage to get it out at a REASONABLE PRICE the apple iPad is going to kill most of the ebooks off instantly (to me these have been a dead end product anyway). Its size could make it a definite enemy to most larger portable media players and possibly intrude on the netbooks too, although to do well there it would need some form of integral word processor facility. Definitely interesting, even at £400 I can see them flying off the shelves to apple fans.

But dont rule out other companies doing the same thing this year, I suspect the mini-tablet pc will be the in thing...

Theyll sell like hotcakes but they should have bundled it with the stand and keyboard imo - anyone whos used a touchscreen/notebook combo knows there are only a few occasions where using the touchscreen is more practical and less annoying than using the keyboard.

Tablet technology is far from new - it hasnt taken off because in practice using a touchscreen isnt that ergonomic except in a few niche cases.

To be honest if the screen is easily visible in sunlight and the thing has enough processing power to handle some graphics and geospatial processing, itd be very very useful in habitat surveying. Ive got a few hundred A4 printouts that I was pretty much drawing on in the field, to be able to draw straight onto the tablet, delete/undo mistakes, and then import it into the proper GIS applications on a desktop would save many, many hours (itd cut at least 50% of the manhours tbh - It took me 2 days to fully digitise 3 days worth of surveying last summer)

All this was quoted earlier by Engadget who were the same people to put a price on information offered on the latest Apple product pre any confirmation they were making it.

I think the offer was $200k for Engadget/Gawker to get their hands on one for a day to look over it, its funny cus in the end Apple slapped them with a cease and desist which indirectly confirmed the products existence.
