Arma 2 Day-Z mod
on: July 30, 2012, 10:08:32 AM
Anyone else seen/played this?

It looks like great fun and a bit more involved than a regular counterstrike/COD type affair - and it has zombies - judging from some YouTube videos I've watched it's become an overnight hit. Only problem is you have to have Arma 2: Combined Operations which is currently selling for about £25, which is a shame as I'd like to give it a go for free without having to buy the full Arma 2 game, it looks like the sort of game that's great that have a small group working together on and in fact it seems to be the only way to survive without being murdered or eaten.

It has suddenly become huge and I would like to play more than the 5min I did at a mates house however...

1) It requires ARMA 2 which as you said it £25... it only dropped to £20 in the steam sale.
2) The ARMA2 engine is AWFUL! Texture popping, zombies/players movement is zerky and random (running towards you and suddenly pop in front of you), things run/spawn through walls/doors, combat feels detached, UI in infurating.

Great idea. Horrible product.

However... They have confirmed that the entire mod is easily ported to ARMA3 and with the amount of attention this mod has gotten a lot of extra work is going into that release. Also most of my issues with the Arma2 engine have been, at least slight, sorted in the Arma3 engine.

Shame they never did it in a source engine :(

I know of at least two people who love Arma 2, but they are waiting for Arma 3 to be released too.

If you want something military as an on line game to try then World of Tanks might be worth a go. It isn't strictly accurate to real life, nothing much is though.

If you just want a new game there are several available free.

Aion is now free to play, the US version was better when I tried it cause you get freedom to trade and a full 8 slots.

LOTRO is similar, you get quests up to lvl 30 but then it effectively becomes a killfest. Areas after that point need payment to unlock quests. It does have an alternative option, you get free in game credit, so you can buy new areas and extra slots just by doing stuff in game.

Conan Star WarsTOC and WoW (if anyone wants to try it) now have free starter levels. I'm expecting them to go free to play when Guild Wars 2 comes out.

These games are also free to play, although some may be more try before you buy.

Runes of Magic
Dungeons and Dragons
Forsaken World
Lineage 2
Vindictus
Alloids
Shaiva
Battlestar Galactica
Atlantica Online

Other free to play games I'm currently enjoying:

Tribes Acend - One of the best online FPS's I'ved played in a long time. On steam.
Blacklight Retribution - Not a bad online FPS, combat feels a bit detached but the ideas are sound. On steam.
SMITE - In beta atm but soon coming out. 3rd person moba (think leauge of legands / doac but 3rd person not isometric view).

World of Tanks, Lots of the F2P MMOs and Ghost Recon Online are alright however they all have a 'pay 2 win' option (extra power ammo in WoT and GR's case) which I really hate and makes me stop playing :P

EA have annoucned they are looking at a F2P model for SWtoR as they really are bleeding customers at the moment. They have also cut their development team for the 2nd time in 2 months, losing some of their head guys.

Thanks guys, it was more the fact that it was a tactical zombie survival shooter that made it so interesting rahter than being something free to play, I think it might be worth waiting for the Arma 3 version then and see how that fares as to whether its worth purchasing. I wonder how many people bought Half Life purely for Counter Strike back in the day?

Indeed. I'm all for the modding community and I spent most of my gaming time on random HL based mods back in the day... heres hoping that Half-life 3 (when! not if!) comes out a lot of the community will come back... Value already giving everyone a head start with the Workshop side of things.

I'm sure a lot of people did get HL just for CS however HL was an awesome game where as ARMA 2 is a sort of smaller market due to being a 'realistic' shooter... plus by the time CS was huge (1.6) HL could be had for a couple quid :P

I've played it for a few hours over a week or so. It's fun, but unfortunately until they sort out direct comms properly (voice chat, proximity based) trying to get anywhere in it is ridiculously hard. You'll find yourself killed a heap of times trying to get out of bean wars (spawn near the coast, people fight over tins of beans to eat).

Zombies are glitchy bastards and will hit you through solid walls.

Trees and other inanimate objects can kill you (crush) at random.

Your character will spack out at the top of a ladder and leave you with broken legs in a pile of zombies at the bottom of said ladder.

Oh and first... You and your buddies have to find each other in a game where everyone looks the same and the rule generally is "kill everything", there is no such thing as spawning together you could be a full 30+ minute trudge across hostile ground before you meet, that's 30+ minutes of trying to live solo while meeting up with a mate to play together.

Cold can kill you
Hunger can kill you
Thirst can kill you
Loss of blood can kill you
Friends will kill you
Others will try to kill you
Zombies will kill you even if you're in a tank....flying through the sky.
Trees will kill you
Walls are also lethal
Rocks can kill you
The ground can kill you
Infection can annoy the tits off of you
Pain is possibly the most annoying side effect anyone has implemented in a game and will annoy the tits off of you especially when you can't find bloody painkillers

So yeah other than it be a massively annoying game with so many bugs and not really conducive to multiplayer coop play between friends, it's cool.

LOL M3ta7h3ad, yeah I gather more people actually die from buggy in-game mechanics at the moment than anything else, I was reading a bit more earlier and as well as the potiential Arma 3 port the devs may even turn this into a standalone game (probably Kickstarter backed) in which case I would jump on board, as I'd imagine with all the issues fixed (a lot of which seem to be down to Arma itself being rather buggy and temperamental) it will be a true triumph. Because the game is effectively realtime it would be cool to have a Tek team, there's future plans for things like being able to set up basecamps and such which would really bring that aspect together.

Yeah I've still got the early version on my laptop for when I next come up there :) I might take you up on that and give the newer one a go. Looks like its about £14 at the moment.

Oh and with WarZ coming I'm not sure if DayZ will survive.

Persistent world zombie RPG MMO. Same 'model' as GW2 as buy the game and that's it.

Oh and take note the game (and name) was well under development before DayZ appeared.

Depends, I've read a bit about the War Z and it doesn't sound as raw as they make it out to be. I also don't like the fact that there is a very closed community for it already. Day-Z already has a massive fanbase, I can't see them all suddenly switching over to a new game, especially with the improvements and potential Arma3/standalone versions on the horizon.

It's now official:
http://dayzgame.com/

Updates in due course as there's nothing on the official site yet, but I'm glad I didn't bother grabbing Arma 2, I'll wait for this.

If you want old fashioned, super fast paced FPS, then Tribes Ascend is the game to play.

I'm absolutely loving it.

It's on Steam and Free To Play.

Add me as a friend in Tribes, give you a game sometime, name is Walrusbonzo :D

arma2 is less buggy than dayz and pretty good for multiplayer. The realism though is a ball ache until you get used to it.
