Boris Johnson writes?

Seems so and he isn;t that bad at it either. Normally you would expect him to be the standard Eaton trained schoolboy who never grew up but hes actually produced something worth reading :/

The Dream of Rome is exactly what it says on the can, an analysis of the Roman empire and why it was so successful. Except it also compares Rome with the EU and its relations with the member states.

OK I dont agree with everything but his points are well discussed and mostly valid.

Finished the dream of rome, its pretty predictable along the lines of what the Romans did for us and wrong in some areas.

If you are in the situation of thinking the Romans really did *anything* positive in Britain then read Terry Jones Barbarians by Terry Jones and Alan Ereira. Romes contributions to Europe were:

1) robbing everyone they could and either exterminating them or knocking them back to the stone age

2) Stealing any technology they thought might help them in war, if it didnt help their war efforts they were not interested and just in case someone else thought of a way to use it the thing was suppressed.

3) The Pax Romana, or Roman peace also known as if you dont pay your taxes or make any trouble we have a nasty professional army and will exterminate you.

4) popularised barbarity in the coliseums, the barbarians found it too barbaric.

The whole idea of the Roman empire was

1) an extended city walls for their capital city, the further the walls extended the safer the city was and the safer Roman citizens felt.

2) a way to pay the wages of the army and build improvements. There was never enough money inside Rome for this so the only way the empire could survive was to expand continuously. Needless to say once they had run out of enemies they could bump off quickly and rob the empire started to fall to bits.
