Cat5 - Straight trhough > Crossover?
on: May 10, 2006, 11:17:24 AM
I need a long piece of crossover Cat5 to connect my PC to a wireless reciever (that has to be quite a distance from the PC).

Unforchunatly I only have straight through cat5. I dont have a crimper or any  RJ45 connectors.

Is there an easy awy to convery straight through cat5 into corssover? Maybe a software conversion?

Cheers.

Sometimes network cards (high end) can do it. However only way I know of to do it without cutting the cable and crimping is by using a crossover adapter whatsit... which plugs into one end.

yeah just go to maplin or similar and get a converter.  Just a little box that does exactly what you want for a couple of quid.

No software solutions would work as the network card does the decoding and wouldnt know what to do with the weird wiring.  Although lots of network cards these days can handle either type of cable without much trouble...  you may be lucky to have a card/port that understands both.

I did give it a go but it wouldnt register a connection. Im using my onboard network card on my LAnparty NFII mobo.

This what I need?

Cheers for the quick replies.

Have you tried just plugging it in ?

Some hardware devices, especially wireless bridges, are designed to cope with either straight through or crossover.

Nope thats just a normal coupler i.e. an extender.  There are couplers that do the crossover bit for you but I cant see one in the maplin catalog. (they used to sell them).  Youre looking for something like this:

Actually, its not as elegant but you could just buy the coupler you found and a short bit of crossover cable.  Plug the crossover cable in one end of the coupler and you get the same effect, i.e.

PC > long cat 5 cable > coupler > short crossover cable > PC

No not really.

Wouldnt it be cheaper to just rewire it?

^^ he doesnt have a crimper or any terminals :(

you could always just buy some terminals (uber cheap) then use a pair of pliers/screw driver to push the pins in... i didnt even know crimpers existed when I started with networking, i used to push all the pins in with a  screwdriver... and used to re-use old crimps too :)

id post you a couple of crimps free... but ive run out muyself :(

unfortunatly its £7 for postage, but if there is something else you want there isnt much point in messing around.

To make it clearer: one of these + one of these
+ your long non-crossover will make it crossover for £ 3.70.
