Extending wireless range
on: July 13, 2007, 17:49:48 PM
Ive got wireless internet in my house and I want to extend its range so I can pick it up in the shed. It is not far out of range now, sometimes the network is visible with very low signal, but I have never been able to connect.

At the moment I have a D-Link DI-624 as the modem/router

I also have a Speedtouch580 wireless ADSL modem/router and a The D-Link DWL-900AP+ Wireless Access Point. I cant work out if either of these can act as a repeater.

I will be accessing the wireless with laptops (built in wi-fi).

Anyone know if I can do this without extra equipment?

The wireless AP (DWL-900AP) lists these as extra modes:

    * wireless repeating to other DWL-900AP access points
    * Point to point wireless bridging
    * Wireless ethernet client

Are any of these what I need?

I think its repeating but I cant remember off hand.

You need t6o set up the thing between the two locations. Normally though, providing the distance was short enough, I would put a cable down = far more secure for business stuff.

Cable isnt really necessary in this case.  Its only a semi-permanent arrangement and its only for leisure use. Also we are in the middle of nowhere so I doubt anyone will be snooping.

It seems that repeating is the option I want but I cant get it working.

I have been tinkering with the two for a few hours and dont seem to be able to get it to work. All security is disabled on the router for the time being.

When the AP is connected it does seem to extend the range of the network but nothing can connect through it, it always returns limited or no connectivity and cannot be pinged or accessed directly (nor can any of the network).

I have filled in the MAC address of the router in the AP mode setup page, is there something else I am missing?

For some reason I just cant get this to work.

The AP will repeat the network, NetStumbler shows both the router and the AP broadcasting with a green light and all seems well, however for some reason I cannot connect to the AP. Windows wireless app gets to acquiring network address but it cannot, then i get limited or no connectivity.

It seems like the AP is not forwarding DHCP information but I cant work out why. I assume the dhcp server on the AP(repeater) should be turned off and only the router one turned on?

Any ideas anyone?

This is what I see on NetStumbler, the top listing is the AP and the bottom is the router.

If you think the AP isnt forwarding DHCP could you not try and statically assign?
