I generally try downloading 1080p trailers from the Apple website when I want to do that, that is generally a very fast mirror. Microsofts can be too, try downloading SP1 for Windows 2003 or something

Are you asking because all of a sudden you got really poor download speeds even with your connection fine?
If so your not the only one from a wide variety of ISPs and talk on web blogs seems to be bt faults somewhere in midlands.

If not ignore me :)

Cheers for them guys :)

The reason for doing it is ive recently just got upto 8meg broadband with Toucan for £15 a month.......now I know its cheap so arent expecting that much from it. My router is connected at 8.2meg, so I thought id get fair fast downloads.........but for example, from the Microsoft website I get around 120KB/sec which is more like 1meg to be honest. Im still on this give it 10 days to settle and get the best line speed thing which ive read about. But at the moment im pretty disappointed with the speeds.

Downloading a popular torrent file is a good way as well. Legal one of course. ;)

Try downloading several big files at once and see if it improves, sometimes when you are downloading a single file the server may limit your speed, could also be your provider throttling back too ;)

Yeah, I could be getting throttled as it is a cheap ISP which im with.

Could things pick up after the 10day period thing? I aint really heard of this before.

Wouldnt trust it but you can only give them a bit of time just in case. Unfortunately you arent assigned an exclusive 8mbit pipe you have to share.

That chocky orange isnt terrys and Im not sharing either! :D

Im supposed to have up to 8 meg broadband from talktalk but its never connected at more than two. Its rock solid at that though and still cheaper than pipex.

Yeah, I just went for cheapness as I dont use the net that much anymore really. My router is connected at 8meg though, before it was 7meg, and over night went to 8.

Thats why I like cable, you dont get this "up to" nonsense. You get the connection speed you pay for. Or you do in my experience at least so all the cable haters out there can STFU :P

Alot of adsl providers are switching their products from "8meg" to "up to 8meg", and severa; state that you cant expect more than 2meg at peak times.

Plus.net are really taking the piss with this lately, using "traffic shaping" to limit ftp and p2p to 2kbps at peak times, which is like 4pm til 3am in reality.

Anyway, to max out ya connection get DAP or sommink and use it to do 3 or 4 dls at the same time. Dont rely on speedtests.
