Real pain with this is that its not even my laptop!!!!!!

Sorry I didnt make it clear. It is dependent on your card.

Orinoco Gold = didnt cope well even with different channel, it picked up too much noise (poor SnR).

Netgear card = the replacement card, coped fine with it (SnR ratio is better)

Seriously, get hold of another card and do a scan around your house. You could be suffering interference from a neighbours network.

Yeah... if there is a emergency in the local area within the footprint of my wifi setup (which doesnt reach the front of my house). Then there would be a problem.

To be honest I havent checked what channel it is, but I believe I was breaking the law.

WIFI channels are set up so that 3 channels away from each other = the minimum interference. > 3 = interference from the higher up channels, < 3 = more interference from the lower channels. So if his scans come up true, either add 3 to it, or subtract 3 from it.

Also... DECT phones are bastards for screwing up wifi transmission. Make sure your phones are set on an appropriate channel if possible.

Its usually 5

Channels 1, 6, 11 are the only ones that dont have any overlap

Actually its 3.

Every 3 channels = a lull in interference from neighbouring channels.

Im quite clued up on this sort of problem, many of my own customers have reported poor range with the netgear PCMCIA cards, regardless of channel, and my Acer laptop always gets a good signal at their sites.

I never disputed 1 6 11, I said that if you are 3 channels away from your interfering neighbours network, you will be experiencing the minimum interferance from him. I was disputing your "5" bollocks. Which was quite rightly well disputed, because it was as it turns out... bollocks.

Channels can overlap as much as 5. Thats why you try to use either 1, 6 ,11

or if you need more them 3 max to keep intereference to a minimum.

Hi guys

I get the same problem regardless of which channel I set my router to use. I also get the same problem at work, using 3 different cards (though all 511s!)

I recon that it could be an incompatibility issue between this card and the model of laptop.

Ill be getting in touch soon Nathan to try out your spare mini-PCI if thats still ok?!

Hi people.

Worked it out, and it is a compatibility problem. Ive borrowed the USB NetGear Wireless adapter from work; from what we call the PC MOT kit :-)

It worked fine at work and is now working smooth and nice in the comfort of my Bedroom. Lovin it :-D

We got there in the end...and you should all treat yourselves to a biscuit as a way of patting yourselves on the back! :mrgreen:
