Ipod docking question

As a non Ipod user I have no idea what connections they use etc.. however my friend has an Ipod docking station on his in car stereo and I would like to plug a different mp3 player in. Are there any cables that will let me do that?

I have just bought an Alpine head unit that comes with an iPod direct control cable and it also has a usb connector on it so you can plug a usb pen drive in.

as far as i am aware unless you have an ipod or a usbpen style mp3 player there is no solution.

Apple in proprietary device connection shocker. Theyre almost as bad as Sony :lol:
