Bahahaa, decisions decisions.

Im tempted away from the 23" as I remember having a sickeningly high res laptop screen which was great apart from the fact the res was so high when playing games they struggled. Even though I think its fair to say my comp isnt underpowered now, Im tempted away from a monitor which is above a standard res.

Which leaves 1920x res...but does it make much difference between 1920x1080 and 1920x1200?

Trying to convince myself that one of these screens will double up as a TV etc for when I move out...

Convince yourself all you like a 24" lcd monitor is going to look small anywhere, compared to whacking a 40" on the wall :P

Get the monitor best suited to your needs out of those resolutions.

problem is the cost of a 40", and the fact i tend to only watch stuff on the comp now anyway. Will likely end up sharing a place when i move out so having a screen in my room = win.

My needs ideally are just bigger = better in terms of the work I do...

Ended up biting the bullet and getting the 24" S2409W monitor.

Its just arrived and Ive just connected it up. Tis a bit of a beast! :D:D

It actually turned out that my LG wasnt a 17" but a 19". The vertical size was 30", same as this monitor, but the extra width is extremely noticeable, and theres still a slight increase in vertical resolution so overall everything is a bit sharper :D

Being a bit of a noob when it comes to monitors (evidently) - is there a way of changing the system from reporting the monitor as a generic PnP device, to the actual make/model?

Also, how is the best way to calibrate the monitor. I keep reading how people find contrast etc to be a bit off out the box, but tbh I dont notice much difference. It would be good to actually calibrate this monitor properly so that the colours are right for when Im messing about with photography stuff etc?!

EDIT:
N/M about the Generic PnP thing, Ive managed to get it to install the proper drivers.

Nah, i dont work in Sales now :P

You said you wanted something to calibrate :P, generally i just use it as it comes out the box, but some of our customers are designers, printers etc, colours need to be spot on.

Aye, thats how Ive done it in the past, but I got the impression from all the reviews and info I was reading that adjusting the settings can make quite a difference. All ive done though is lowered the brightness as tad as it was a little glaring. Some people reckoned putting the brightness down to 10 and contrast up to 90 helped ><

Tis fine now I hope. Will wait and see if some photos get critiqued for the colours being off!

I went to calibrate my Dell screen when i first got it, I soon realised that Dell had done a better out of the box job on the settings than I could do, and left it at that. Cheaper screens I think do need a bit of tweaking, but a good quality monitor should be fine out of the box.

I use a Pantone Huey to calibrate my monitor for photography purposes. It makes small changes to my monitor but TBH for general viewing you wouldnt notice. It only matters if you are trying to get prints to look close to what you see on the screen.

PS Im running an HP1955, not big but a very nice acurate PVA panel.

On a side note from the monitor discussion, Ive been putting everything together for my parents new machine throughout the day on screen breaks from work. Tis up and running without a hitch. Must admit I am kind of jealous as I much prefer their smaller case, am liking the screw-free design, and it also runs much quieter than any computer Ive built before. I forgot about the dvd drive so they have had to use the 9 year old CD/RW drive for now ><

Ive always been so lucky and never seen a dead pixel on any monitor Ive bought so far. Ive always bought Acer as well which are comparatively cheap.
