New computer from old parts...part deux
on: September 20, 2009, 16:11:42 PM
So, now my computer has been upgraded, Ive pretty much got most of the stuff to build an (old) new computer for the rents from the old stuff.

What we have so far:

1 x    EVGA 8800GTS SuperClocked 320MB DDR3 DVI PCI-E Graphics Card
OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 Gold XTC Memory CL5 LIFETIME WARRANTY
OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 Platinum XTC Memory Kit CL4 2.1V LIFETIME WARRANTY
Antec EarthWatts 500W 80%+ Efficiency PSU - 80mm Fan 4x SATA 2x PCI-E
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 (2.13ghz) Socket 775 FSB1066 2MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor

So all I really need is a hard drive, mobo, and case. Before I order early next week I was wondering whether people have any suggestions for/against the following:

MSI P43 Neo-F iP43 Socket 775 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard - £51.80
Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB SATAII 7200RPM 16MB Cache - OEM Caviar Blue - £32.58
Coolermaster Elite 330 Black Mid Tower Case - No PSU - £27.98

Suggestions?

Dont really need a new psu though as the Antec Earthwatts should be fine?!

Am now toying with the idea of upping my LG 17" monitor to a Samsung 22" widescreen monitor ><

Ah good point, the Antec is fine.

Ps. If you get a 22" go for a Dell :P support/warranty is unreal, get it through pcbuyit for full 3 year cover, even single pixel defect.

I thought Dells were likely made by the same peeps that make Samsungs?

Was thinking of:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143280

Or the 24" version.

Still undecided as my 17" LG seems pretty huge, and Im guessing a 22" wide wont offer much more in terms of vertical size.

its probably be about the same vertical, just a lot wider

makes a pretty big difference once you get used to it :-o

or, just get another 17inch screen and have dual screens ?
(this is what I prefer/do)

handy to have one screen to have a film playing/playing a game and another to brows the web, check email etc. etc. :-)

Ah but my desk is titchy. Will/would be hard enough trying to fit a 22" widescreen on it with the speakers left and right of it!

Recommendation seconded for the use of PCBuyIT as your Dell supplier, too. Cant go wrong with a Dell monitor.

Go for a 24" if you can afford it and stick your stuff for your parents into a cheap case.

Dell wise, are there any particular lines which are better than others whilst not being stupidly more expensive?

And is it me or some years back were 21"-23" normal 4:3 screens all the rage, and now theyve all but died out (unless you want to pay craploads) - replaced with 22-24" Widescreens?

Was pondering that...does a LED backlit screen improve on a standard backlit one that much more to justify the price increase?

Bahahaa, decisions decisions.

Im tempted away from the 23" as I remember having a sickeningly high res laptop screen which was great apart from the fact the res was so high when playing games they struggled. Even though I think its fair to say my comp isnt underpowered now, Im tempted away from a monitor which is above a standard res.

Which leaves 1920x res...but does it make much difference between 1920x1080 and 1920x1200?

Trying to convince myself that one of these screens will double up as a TV etc for when I move out...
