Dead pixels for me have been pretty common. The TFT Saga for my family so far:

Bought our first TFT screen back ~2000-2001 maybe. 14" from PC World methinks. Dead pixel out the box pretty much bang on in the middle. Replaced it, 2nd one had a dead pixel to the side. A week later it had 2 more so we replaced it again. The 3rd replacement luckily didnt get any.

Move on a year or two and I build my own computer and get a 15" TFT. This one was fine for a while but ultimately I think it got one near the middle again, but by this time I think Id upped my computer again and bought my LG 19" monitor which was absolutely fine for 4 years. Only problem was slight screen bleed at the top but not noticeable unless on standby/black screen. And now this monitor, back to dead-pixelville it seems.

I presume when screens are returned due to dead pixels, the manufacturer has to replace the whole screen/film, and that its not fixable by them? This must be quite a large chunk of lost profit/waste on their part!

I do seem to have a bit of bad luck when it comes to gadgetry/toys I really want. My first proper mountain bike which was a 13th birthday present was stolen 36 hours after we bought it. I bought one of those old Creative Jukebox MP3 players in guernsey when they were just out, and it had broken before I had got it home. Creative then accidentally sent 2 players back to me by mistake. Therere loads more things like this that havent been too lucky when they come into my possession ><

And for anyone not believing my tech jynxness...

...replacement monitor turned up, courier got it out of the box (as the old one needed to go in it) and it looks like its been dropped, resulting in the lower left corner having a big crack in it, a piece of plastic hanging down from the top, and a worrying rattle inside!

Needless to say I am back to using the dead-pixel monitor while I wait for a call back from PcBuyIt while they sort out a replacement replacement ><

I just called Dell Direct and they dealt with it from the code on my box?

Ps How unlucky!

Aye. I got a bit confused from their website when they say who to contact. Doesnt make it clear who should be first point of call. The courier said though to go through whoever dealt with the first one so thats what I did.

The scan I took of the couriers form has on that the screen is DOA, as opposed to a dead pixel, which I find a little bizarre!

Its going back to Dell returns, a screen with a Dead Pixel wont be repaired, it will be written off as faulty or in this case DOA, this is why i tell people to buy Dell through PCBuyIT, any other Manufacturer/Retail site will just fob you off and quote their sh*tty Terms and Conditions they use to Fob you off with sh*t goods.

New screen is here now. No dead pixels...so far! And no signs of droppage!

I still dont quite follow the returns thing. Fair enough write off a dead pixel as faulty, but if DELL treats dead pixels as faulty as standard, why not just say that is the cause for the replacement? Something seems dodgy to me for some reason.

Oh ffs...

It started flickering whilst I was working and the colours went all weird ><

Ive unplugged it and put it on a different extension, seems fine now, though I doubt that this was the route of the problem. Will have to wait till later when I can do some stuff like Fallout to see if I can stress test the monitor and make it have a hissy fit again.

Thatd be 3x Dell monitors in 3 days if this one has to go back!

Just been on the phone to dell to get this monitor replaced.

It started flickering again whilst on Kongregate. I dont blame the guy for being skeptical, given that this is monitor #3, but it was hard explaining how the colour just goes like its been set to 8bit colour, and the refresh rate seems to take a dive. He got me to boot into the bios to see if it happens there and of course it stopped when the power went, so I had to then explain that its not always a problem as it was working fine today for 3 hours before it happened.

Gah!

Something tells me the Samsung might have been a better idea!

This just proves the tech jynxness anyway!

The monitor when all is fine:

And when the issue occurs:

Mine rarely has a misalignment issue at switch on, but power off and on again cures it.

Is that what it is?

It was weird, it was totally fine and I was just merrily clicking away on a flash game and wham, it happened, after being fine for 3 hours.

I think Dell are specifically checking the next replacement to ensure its fine >< I just hope they dont drop it in transit!

Had a panic moment tother day when this happened:

However after 30 seconds of thinking "Crap...monitor 5 is crap too" and starting to wonder if I could get my money back, I noticed that malfunction appeared to be effected by the mouse cursor. I figured Id see whatd happen if I changed the resolution backwards and forwards. Doing so crashed the display driver, which was reverted/restored, and back to normal. This was all in Win 7 so I am guessing maybe the drivers arent quite Win 7 compatible yet, or could this be an overheating issue?

Ive had screens looking just like that when gfx cards overheat....

got a program to check the gfx temp ?

which card do you have ?  did you install the full driver package ?

my brother has the same gfx card as I do, only difference being I just installed the driver and he installed the full gfx software package....

for some unknown reason.... the software would switch the gfx fan off permanently... guessing the fan speed control software is goosed... goggled it and found how to edit a text file and input the fan speed manually.... just left it going at 50% all the time and its always been ok since ;)

(both win7, was fine in xp)

XFX 4890 is the card. I think its running off of the windows 7 drivers still given that Ive not got an ati catalyst control panel thingy going on. Once Dragon Age has finished downloading I think Ill see about getting the drivers updated if they will update!
