OnLive - Anyone tried this yet?

I couldn't find a thread on this.. has anyone tried it yet?

If you don't know what it is it's basically cloud computing for gaming?

One of my mates has been playing and says it's really good, HD resolution and everything apparently.

He's only using the free trial for the moment, but he's considering getting the thin client that will then give you a proper controller for console style games.

It must be laggy if nothing else? It has to send your data to the cloud, then the cloud follows your instructions and sends back the appropriate visual data... it surely can't be as reliable as actually playing the game off your own machine?

Also what happens with profiles/saved games? How long can you play/own a game for in the cloud? They aren't exactly cheap either looking at it! I don't really see the incentive here unless you can't afford a half decent gaming computer.

The basics people need to know are...

1. Very cool idea.
2. They charge to much for it
3. It only really works if you live on top of the exchange (and only just)
4. Multiplayer stuff is out of the question
5. They have issues with getting games on the platform with the licence deals needed and then keeping them on there.

In the future this or partial technology from this will be the norm, just not there yet.

People keep banging on about the pipedream of cloud computing but the reality is we are far from close to anything remotely like it becoming residential. We have neither the infrastructure, bandwidth or requirements for it. I think it will remain in the domains of business, science and research for a good decade or more yet.

I tried it when it was in beta and it played pretty well. There was very minimal lag in single-player for something that was streaming from the USA. However, I didn't try multi-player as I expected that to lag a lot.

They have announced that it will be released in the UK on the 22nd September ( http://www.onlive.co.uk ) and hopefully they will be doing the same as in the US where they were giving away free systems with the purchase of certain games.

I tried it, and thought it was crap, and Clocked is pretty much on the ball.

It's surprising how low the latency is, even when tunnelling over two VPN's:



I only 'own' two games on it though, both of which I got for free. ;D

If any of you are attending Eurogamer Expo in London this year (if you are, I hope my jealousy gives you a migraine from all the way across the planet :P), they're giving out the thin client units for free; around 2,000 of them over the course of the four days of the show.

Though I think this give-away could be a sign of desperation, so I'd love to get one just to hack test some ideas, before/if they go bankrupt.

All investors lose their money and shares are now worthless
New OnLive opens
The 3rd party sells all the assets back to OnLive
New OnLive promises to take half the staff back

HTC have lost $40m in their deals tho.

Latest: BT considering writing off their investment aswell.

Such a shame as the idea was sound it just suffered from a few lag issues (more so in this country than states) and was way too slow with releases.

It was never going to work in this country, we don't have the backbone to support it, the fact is all these companies see is $$ signs and ignore reality.

Indeed. I had a blast playing Space Marine on my android tablet with a 360 controller when in Miami... full games anywhere, anytime was what I was excited about as a backpacker but alas will have to wait till someone trys it again :p

There was very little point in it, people have invested in computers already so that would just duplicate what they already have.

Most graphics and other game processing can be done more effectively locally. That leaves processing movements, actions, NPC decisions and working out the result to the server. - a far lower data transfer is required and is a more suitable workload division.
