Recording what is played?

With every system Ive ever had I can simply record whatever is being output by my speakers just by selecting stereo output or what you hear. Using this new system (Asus P5Q-E onboard sound), I select stereo and no program I use will record anything. Quite annoying as you can imagine, any suggestions?

Checked to make sure in the bios the audio is set to hi-def or whatever, and that device manager isnt listing any audio devices as having a problem (basic stuff but it serves as a checklist!)

Correct sound card selected for recording i.e. you havent got another device that also shows as an audio device? Obviously nothing muted on either play or record?

All sorted, for some reason Vista decided to hide a couple of devices, cheers for the suggestions.
