I've done virus scans with nothing found. Any idea how I can switch it off, or a better free option than AVG?
Computer has Windows 10 home edition.

Not really, it's just using RAM to cache the drive, when there is actually nothing on there that is used often enough.
Main issue is it's not giving it up again when needed for actual program use. main two possibilities is there is malware on it of some kind, not used for anything that important and the AV says it's clean.
Alternative is windows has a fault, which used to happen in earlier versions.Only option then would be find the actual broken file and replace or reinstall. Computer hasn't been reinstalled in years.

click start, type "device manager" hit return
find the disk under disk drives
right click, properties,
policies tab at the top
un-tick the enable write caching button

As it is basically just a storage drive I pulled the plugs on it. Will have to put them back in and try this out.
