Sony compromised
on: May 03, 2011, 14:07:07 PM
So we all know PSN has been compromised in the last week:

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/04/sony-admits-utter-psn-failure-your-personal-data-has-been-stolen.ars

News today confirms it was not limited to just PSN but now they are admitting Station has been been compromised also:

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/gaming/2011/05/03/sony-online-entertainment-compromised-too/1

Quote
Sony doesn't believe that the primary credit card database has been accessed, but has discovered evidence that an older database of non-US customers has been - a fact which directly affects 12,700 customers

This wouldn't be so much of an issue if these companies let you remove your private data when you stopped using their services.

There is not liking the hacking community and then out right declaring war on them directly. Sony did and they have got their ass ripped in the process.
All of it of course is not on but yeah - OUCH

Read that earlier too on another site. I'm guessing a lot of games companies will be annoyed at Sony over this as a lot of people will hold off buying games until the service is active and others will spend money on other games, possibly on rival systems.

So glad I moved to Xbox 360 and know that details are much more secure with Microsoft compared to Sony. I don't think I can trust them now hearing all this going on.

May even think to completely deactivate my PSN permanently.

Brink is out now/this week? And that has a big online component and their PS3 sales will now suffer because of that.
You had Portal 2 with a huge online element and Valve just investing a lot of money with their PS3 integration stuff and offerings, Socom came out that week and one other big game I forget what.

But yeah, not only players they got to deal with, all the companies and their online componants and online mico transaction aspects of their games not able to work you got to calm and appease.

Also they have their Music and Video streaming / selling service which is also down with the PSN network. Overall a big expensive hit for Sony :P

There's another side to that penny though. I'd be inclined to argue that if your details aren't secure with Sony then they aren't secure anywhere.

Pre-paid FTW.

It was and probably still is cheaper to buy the PSN cards when they're on offer, I got some £20 ones for £15 for example

That's a very good point. What happened with Sony was very very advanced according to what I heard and now the FBI are involved with the hacking and data breach.

It is scary to think that it's not safe anywhere even when you have the secure lock icon on websites, is it secure enough?

Nah, Exports are coming to similar conclusions on this.
In some way or very much related Sony Relied heavily on their key code on the PS3 and to some degree used that with their access to the network. Sony has had failed access attempts in the past and these have been unsuccessful. It has only been since this "master key" on their console has been unlocked that there has been a successful attack on their network.

From what I have read on the net, Sony has put heavy reliance on a feature of their system which has always been at risk if something was known (possible this master key of the consoles) as well as that system being similar to what they had on SEO platforms before their console network became anything of anything.
While secure in the focused sense it was this only method and not other multi level security methods most large systems (Xbox especially) apply.

This has caused them to take down the system and it is taking so long to rebuild this from the ground up.

You will likely find that the same form of exploit was applied to the SEO network which I bet has not had its framework updated in a very long time.

Sony and online have always been playing catchup. They not quite ever "Got it"
I would not be surprised at all that to catch up in terms of features of their online network with Xbox Live they may have cut corners.

To be fair, Sony can't really handle this any better than they have done given the scale of the problem. I would say if anything this should now mean the future security of their systems is going to be more secure than any other platform. I'll be happy to go back on PSN when its all back up and running.
