Star Wars : The Old Republic Pre-Order
on: July 21, 2011, 16:23:42 PM
Pre-order is up for The Old Republic headstart.

http://www.swtor.com/preorder

Prices are a bit silly on the collectors editions, and if you order the digital downloads from Origin be careful. They effectively bill you for the full amount straight away so you'll be however much the edition costs down after you order. They get around this because technically they just "verify" the funds so they don't get withdrawn, but it stays as a pending transaction until the game is released.

I tried arguing with them on the phone that it doesn't matter either way, even if they don't complete the transaction until launch day it still effectively lowers your bank balance by the amount you will pay for the game but they didn't seem to see it that way. Some redneck just drawled at me a bit, saying "mebbe it's like, y'know, a hotel room? Like when they block a load of cash off on your card in case you trash the joint."

Those Origin prices are Batsh*t mental, it looks like they are now overcharging to include early access, £45 + £5 pre order for the Digital Download!

Will wait for release and pick it up for £30

50 quid for the digital copy and in effect wanting the money now sounds fishy to me “high demand” and  ”limited  quantities” sounds bollocks tbh.

It will be interesting to see what people are saying when the NDA is lifted, at these prices its either going to be the most epic game ever! and they know it or utter tripe and they want to try and recoup some of the development cost back.

Have heard 1 or 2 negative things about it, but like everything else on the internet took with a large pinch of salt, but the prices and the fact there isn’t going to be a open beta is concerning.

I would have to agree, i reckon they are trying to recoup now, the lack of Open Beta and the high pricing is rather worrying.

And this new trend of overcharging for PC games is a joke, we already pay more than the US because of the conversion, £50 UK ($81 US) is a pricy standard edition.

Combat looks quite good, from what the guy kept saying to help people when your stunned you can break out of it with the right key / key combo and not just button mash but some timing as well.

As far as I understood it... this weekend 25-27th is EVERYONE that signed up for testing and accepted the invite...

Damn the server queues are likely to be crazy  ;D

And yep I'm in it... really cant wait... already have it downloaded and just read start is 4pm Friday London time (depending on when you accepted the invite - as its staggered like early access)

They are not being kind and letting you look at the game.
They are using everyone to stress test the servers. They want to see the queues, they want people to crash the servers, they want the lag.
They want to see how the combat mechanics handle when there is a full server as it is something you can try and simulate but it is not the real thing. They want to see how they handle queues and the systems that handle or do not handle it.

It will also happen when this game goes live as updates, new servers can take some time but learning after go live you need these things will result in a longer time to solve them.

They keep sending me these weekend Beta invites and the latest email said invite to Beta without a mention of weekend only so this time i accepted but after figuring out its another Beta weekend and a Stress Test weekend i won't be bothering cus it will be a big mess and not worth my time.

I'll wait and see who starts to play it on tekforums and then join in at some point. rather sick of the way media is overhyping every game that comes out recently, 10/10 reviews but the games suck.

This guy is doing some extensive coverage:

You can see the character customisation. They have put some thought in it. You got some races like cyborgs only for some class types etc for Lore sense.

I've been in the general beta for a few weeks now.

It's quite good. Does exactly what it says on the tin really.

Had a go on the tonight it is playing well to say the servers must have been getting a fair old hammering with it being open beta, I’m still not sure if I will buy the game as I simply don’t have time to commit to an MMO anymore, I’ve only played one of each faction up to level 3 but I must say I’m finding the storyline and voice acting quite compelling so far so might just get the game for the levelling experience.

Here is about 10 mins of game footage (warning contains spoilers)

Found an annoying bug there is a orangey dot below the default chat window position in the top left, at first I thought it was a stuck or broken pixel, which I wasn't happy about as I only got the monitor this week a Dell 27” but hadn’t noticed it in any other games so after 10 mins of firing up other games and swapping wallpapers and not being able to see it, I logged back into the game and changed resolutions to run Fraps as running it at 2560x1440 and recording at the same time was a bit much for my comp and the bloody dot moved!  a quick google found that others had the same dot! lol
