Strange XP Crash
on: March 31, 2006, 13:16:00 PM
Been experiencing a strange problem with XP;

I first noticed it when I was doing a system wide search, it would hang half way through and reboot. I noticed it was hanging as it started to search a particular drive (G:, 200Gb Maxtor). I kept an eye on the search just before it hangs and Ive managed to narrow it down to one folder.

Now when I try to access that folder via explorer, or through safe mode I get the same crash... damn strange if you ask me!

Anyone else experienced XP hanging when you try to access a certain directory? Any ideas what could be causing it?

The drive is pretty full (1-2gb free out of 189gb available), and I havent defragd it in a while, although I dont see how that could make it crash. (waits for someone to tell me thats exactly whats causing it...)

explorer does seem to have a few problems with folders and files sometimes.
Even more so when it is running out of space. I have one folder and file i cant delete and have never found a way of deleting them.

Hmmm this is getting stranger.... I unplugged the drive (its not the boot, no additional or old OS on the drive) and XP wouldnt boot normally or through last known good config  :shock:

I plugged it back in and XP loads fine (of course with the original problem still there)

Its Serial ata hardrives and windows search, has happened to me before. Other things do it as well, its worse with xp64 as well.

Same with copy and paste or unzipping, that ratloader doesnt work correctly.

Windows hangs but i have only had the hardrive lock up once in a blue moon

Yea SATA and XP seems to have issues. Although the strange thing is, I thought myself lucky; 10 SATA drives hooked up for over 10 months and this is the first time Ive experienced problems like this.... saying that it could also just be the drive. The system has 2 x 200Gb Maxtors (SATA, before they got rid of the normal 4pin power connector), the rest are all newer 300Gb Maxtor Maxlines.

Could just be on its last legs :( I can recreate the crash by accessing or searching that folder, but the rest are ok, so Im moving the rest of the files of the drive.
