Tek Minecraft planning?

With a server potentially in the pipeline courtesy of Knighty, is it worth maybe having a thread to discuss plans for collaborative efforts on the server? We can discuss ideas, and I can always update this post to list the projects in progress, whos working on them, and how people can help?

Knightys Server IP:    78.105.191.184
Soopahs Server IP: 91.135.10.150

Projects

Mineshaft - Weve got a shaft in the basecamp that is a general purpose dig deep and harvest resources

Material and tools storage - We have chests for different materials, there are signs next to each one saying what goes where to keep things easy to find. Itd be good to get them filled up. Eventually itd be good to have a double chest of just one resource, atm we have a "wood" chest that can include raw timber, wood, sticks. Same with stone, would be good to have a double chest full of just cobblestone, one full of gravel etc. This way we can get off to quick and easy starts on other projects

Basecamp - Its huge, I think there are 2 floors in the works. Loads of space so its possible to make a room inside the empty areas, whack a sign up saying its "your room" and do whatever you want in there, store your hard earned diamond kit etc.

Ill start a new post to keep the top one clutter free for actual projects, but I was wondering if anyone has tried building a shelter around the spawn point? I dont know if everyone has the same spawn point in multiplayer, but itd make sense I guess to build a structure big enough for people to have storage chests etc. From there underground (or overground) tunnels can be built to the different projects?

If we did have a shared "base camp" Itd probably be a good idea to either have multiple floors, and/or make use of the signs with custom text so we can have chests with signs next to them that say "Stone" or "tools" etc.

Thoughts?

I was going to try this next as I flooded my mine shaft last night since it was getting boring, I found a new mine to explore instead. But I dont really fancy dying to test it out

The first thing well need to establish is exactly how shared the spawn point is, ie how big does the structure need to be. Overall I agree though.

I wonder if player position will persist between sessions as it does with single player, or if youll always start at the spawn point?

The base floor of the spawn point camp doesnt have to be too big, as we can add more floors, or annexs/wings onto it. Id say as a rule of thumb though 20 square blocks? This would allow space to have a line of ~7 double chests (they have to have a gap between them) with windows etc behind them, furnaces and workbenches.  And plenty of moving space to add entrances to tunnels or something.

Or we could just make it big enough for people to spawn, and then have a short underground tunnel or bridge to the storage facility, and another access tunnel to the "hub" which would have the tunnels and access routes to the different things going on? Im more in favour of this as it would be more tidy. A bit more tricky to sort out, and a little more time consuming to access, but ultimately probably the most organised way for sharing resources etc.

To the casual reader this must all sound soooooooo nerdy...

TBH that is probably true of quite a lot of the conversation here!

Im in favour of the Hub concept with good organisation. This is particularly important if were going to have the server up most if not all of the time, since people will probably log in at different times and its going to be important to have a place for certain things so everyone knows where to find stuff.

I wonder if you can password protect the servers? wouldnt want to log in and find some random has trashed our camp.

Ive seen mention of private and public servers. On the face of things you connect by IP address, so if we kept the IP private and only PMd it to members it should stay private?!

Im pondering the potential for an underground railway. Dig a shaft down to a couple of blocks above the bedrock and then a tunnel 2x2 blocks wide/high that goes straight (until hitting lava etc) putting tracks down one side so that you can whack a powered cart on there, jump on it, and basically go make a cuppa whilst it transports you to sites agggggges away.

given how much each of us has achieved in his own single player world, I cant wait to see what a combined effort can do!

I know. Production...will be 3x faster!

I can use Fraps to record videos at different points. Id leave it running all the time if it didnt really impact frame rate and take up something like 1gb of space per minute of video.

I just found out that the multiplayer aspect doesnt have monsters, and you dont have to mine to find resources, you pretty much just select them from an infinite inventory, meaning for now we dont need a shelter :D
