Trying to find a hi-fi
on: December 14, 2006, 23:21:48 PM
Right, Mum wants a hifi for Xmas,

preferably a hifi with seperate speekers, not a built in unit.

Needs radio (DAB idealy) and a CD slot.

If at all possible Id love to get one with a vinyl deck on it as well, but I dont know if thats at all realistic.

Really looking at £80 budget and I dont want it to be crappy.

Anyone seen anything? Need it before Xmas, so it its real store it would be useful.

Thanks for any advice!

£80 will get you a nice budget micro system fom most high street stores with CD/MP3 and FM tuner, but you wont get a DAB system for that or a turntable. If you want to add a turntable later on remember to make sure it has phono inputs on the back.

Think about a cheap freeview box (people forget they have a good few digital radio channels too), add a suitable DVD player and that should cover almost all the bases. Providing one has speakers, preferably the DVD for 5.1 channel sound, then you can link them together.

Bought a DVD with adequate 5.1 speakers from Prestos a couple of years back for about 40 quid, if you can find something similar with stereo input add a £20 freeview box...

With a cheap TV it would go far beyond your specification.

Agreed. And look for your turntable on the used market before you buy new. Those 50 pound Sony and Audio Technica players are worse than nothing at all. Best bet is to find something used and mount a good entry level cart on it like a Shure m92e ($25) or Audio Technica 301. Dont dare get her a DJ cart, as its rough on moms precious old records. Youll need a cheap preamp as well ($30). Dual brand decks from Germany are good for parents as theyre a great mix of hi fidelity and cheesy features like auto-cue and auto-lift. My personal fave is the 1229* from the mid 70s...

*I seriously have a wierd fetish for these decks, but theyre the only insanely rugged with auto features type deck that Ive found that sounds fantastic. Tracking is brilliant, you can jump on the floor next to them and no skipping!

Cheers, I was thinking my budget was pretty hopeful.

As for the TV, the system is for my (home) kitchen so thats not eally an option. Good thinking tho!

OK, so no DAB, no turnable. Would a £80 budget micro be crappy system? If its worth spending more £ then Ill get Mum something beter.

It needs to be able to fill a pretty big roomwith sound every now and again.

Forget putting a record deck in the kitchen then, the oil/fat from frying can cause more problems than enough!

It also depends on how good her hearing is, if she is normal for her age then the chances are an £80 system will be good enough.

Just remembered seeing something from Tescos while I was shopping...

3 watts per channel might be a tiny bit weedy tho so these might be a better option even though £20 over your budget. Remember not to skimp on your mum, I would love to be able to buy mine one ;)

For a normal room I would have suggested the cheaper one without hesitation, A normal TV will max out at well under 3 watts RMS per channel and probably be edging into overdrive before 1. However as you specified that it was the kitchen you need to get over the sound of cooking, washing up, Etc. and a higher level would be preferable.

My dad used to shove the volume up on the living room TV we had and once it was over a certain level you couldnt stand the distortion. Luckily it had a headphone socket so I added a small amp and a pair of speakers I had lying around and everything was solved :)
