We should have a sticky for software that peple have found that is free, in that no money changes hands.... perhaps a registration process, but nothing hard.

Ill start with what I believe to be the best products for free that a user running Windows XP would benefit from.

Antivirus - http://www.activevirusshield.com. Rebranded Kaspersky 6.0 with some of the extended features taken out but scans email, files and screens spyware/malware.

Firewall - http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/1230_zl/zlsSetup_65_737_000_en.exe Israeli company that produces an excellent piece of firewall software.

Disk backup/imaging - Paragon Drive Image 8.0 SE http://ftp.paragon.eu.com/Nastya/DB8SE.zip - Cut down version of their for sale product which allows for live imaging to local disk *requires registration (name, surname, email address and country)*.

HDTune - Hard drive diagnostics and benchmarking - http://www.hdtune.com - Excellent for finding out more about your hard disk(s) Temperature, features and loads more about your drives performance and status.

VideoLAN - Media playback software (DVD etc) - http://www.videolan.org - Great software for playing DVD movies if you cant be arsed to stump up the 3 quid for PowerDVD :D

PDF creation - http://www.primopdf.com/

There are loads more and Ill add them as I remember them.

Thats just to start you off, if you want to add to this and make it a sticky, then great as Im sure that alot of people could benefit from it.

Cheers
Tongy

I took the liberty of editing your title, Tongy, to make it a MS only thread, lest us geeky Linux and BSD nerds spam your thread.

Mac users should start a seperate thread, as it makes much more sense. ;)

Free for personal or non profit use.
SmartFTP client http://www.smartftp.com/

XP Powertools

All Free, some may require WGA validation: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

In particular the image resizer, the raw thumbnail plug in, and the powercalc :)

Virtual PC 2004

Free used to be paid only. Will likely require WGA but im pretty sure the download I have didnt require it.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/downloads/sp1.mspx

2007 with Vista support will also be free apparantly.

SQL Server and Visual Studio.net Express editions

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/

Visual Web Developer Express Edition

http://www.asp.net/downloads/essential.aspx?tabid=62

May also be linked to in the other link above.

BartPE

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

Providing you have a valid windows licence you can create your own windows xp based live cd, with numerous free plugins. I use mine to do defrag on an entire drive without worrying about files being in use.

Sysinternals

Some Paid for... most free.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx

Not so much a single app, but if you ever want to do something like remote shutdowns or other more technical bits and pieces you can pretty much guarantee these guys have already created an app for it.

oh oh... and dont forget this one either max :)

Real Alternative: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm

Academic Software:

Poseidon CE

Poseidon for UML is a great piece of software, can support quite detailed UML features and even allow you to export your models to Java programming code.

http://www.gentleware.com/download.html

Requires a licence to be registered on the site but requires minimal effort on your part. Licence needs to be renewed whenever a new version is released as I think its how they do some of their beta testing.

Another text editor but can be used for basic letter writing. Especially good for writing books or if you are forgetful as it saves a notes .txt file with the .rtf main document.

EAC
Quote
EAC is a new audio grabber for CD-ROM drives. The main differences between most other audio grabbers :

    *

The cost of registration is low (just a postcard and a stamp)
    *

It works with a new technology, reading audio CDs almost perfectly. If there are any errors that cant be corrected, it will tell you on which time position the (possible) distortion occurred, so you could easily control it with e.g. the media player
