Wireless over a 1km range
on: November 11, 2007, 16:26:31 PM
I have a friend who lives up in the wilderness of Wales who cant get internet to his home. However his friend around 1km away can get a stable 2mb/s adsl connection.

He wants to get an ADSL line to his friends house then setup a wireless link to his house. There is clear line of site with only fields between.

Anyone have any experience of the cost and practicality of this kind of thing? Also what hardware to use?

Cheers!

I looked into this a while ago, albeit I was only after an 80m range.

http://www.networkworld.com/community/?q=node/10257 is a good place to start.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

They dont own or have any rights to the field. So I think thats a no go. It might be plausible if its a LOT cheaper but probably not.

Ive read various google linkings that the D-Link DWL-1750 can operate at over 20 miles. Presuming 20 miles is on over-estimate it should be able to manage 1km in the worst of weathers. The only price I could find was around $1500 though.

The attached might be helpful.  It gives you some basic calculations to work out what gain antenna you need for a wifi link.

When i first started reading up on the Linksys WRT54Gx series I came across a post from someone in Oz whod set up a connection using directional antenna over a considerably bigger distance than that. The point being all it took was a cheap router, a custom firmware and a bit of time and a few parts so it is doable.
