Word 2007 Smart Art - I just want a bloody plain style!
on: November 17, 2009, 15:52:43 PM
So I need to make some hierarchy charts based on some stats that have been performed. The charts are pretty epic in size.

I get the structure sorted in word, but going through the available styles, theres not a single one which is just plain, WITHOUT a shadow effect. WTF.

The shadow effect needlessly adds width to this already humongous chart, making it next to unusable if I cant get it basic looking :/

Am I overlooking something somewhere? Id have thought thered be an option somewhere to just use plan text boxes surely?!?!

Nope, stupidly the shadow is off, that option applies to the text box, not the auto-shape that the style creates behind the text box. I mean seriously...

Im basically having to use the labelled hierarchy chart to get away from this stupid issue, as its the closest I can get to just plain boxes without having to draw everything myself ><

Mayby OpenOffice (and handles ms stuff quite well) it is free and quite simple, I stopped using word as most of the time pisses me off. I looked at their charts and they look plain and simple and you can save as ms Word 97/2000/XP. My wife use it for her work as teacher without problems even if the school only uses ms sh*t.

Aye. In my fury yesterday I looked at google office but it has nothing for charts yet. I would consider open office if I had more time and if my bosses werent technologically backwards. Unfortunately I need to minimise any chances of them not being able to use the chart, theiur computers seem to not even open compatibility format documents sometimes ><

This is all thanks to that bloody evil program I am working with ><

Yeah I know msword is not allways compatible with msword  lol but if you working at home get OO my son needed to open a mschart from the net this morning before school and had no word or the like on the puter I told him to gett OO for next time but he downloaded OO and installed and opened the chart within a few minutes, so the time aspect is negligible :)

Screenshot of the epicness:

OK, maybe it doesnt look so epic there. But consider this...the figures have been input by hand...having determined the groupings from an ASCII text file which required being printed out (18 pages) and stuck together to form a massive table, and then decoding the binary groupings at the base of the table. Once that was done, I had to convert the sample numbers to the NVC classification scheme seen in the screenshot using another mahoosive text file.

Headache inducing. Truly.

Haha yeah, must remember to do that tomorrow. When I was doing the GIS stuff I was backing up literally every 20 mins and had maybe 400gb of backups for just one file >< Mind you that program does crash on a daily basis so its required. Now Ive stopped using it though it does seem that my backup madness has calmed...
