Xbox 360 Online Questions..
on: May 29, 2006, 18:54:24 PM
Allright then , couple of questions for you guys (thanks in advance :p)

Firstly, my university like making it hard for us gamers, so theyve blocked most ports, however theyve let us register 10 ports each to open (or you can open a range of 10 which counts as 2ports). This means im able to play steam games, but heres the questions :

(1) Does anyone know which ports are needed for the xbox 360? Do you think itll be possible for me to play online.
(2) We only have one sockey in our room, and atm i use that for my pc, i take it i can just use a small hub for my pc and xbox.

Cheers guys

Is it really necessary for the three ports mentioned in Troubleshooting (UDP 88, UDP 3074, and TCP 3074) to be opened for Xbox Live to work properly?

Most cable/DSL routers implement Network Address Translation (NAT), as does Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). For NAT devices, no port forwarding is required for Xbox Live to work. Port forwarding is required only if you are running a proxy server or true firewall instead of or in addition to a NAT.

(2)Yes.  I have a switch next to my computer which has my PC, Xbox and Xbox360 connected to it.  The uplink of the switch is connected to my router, a Netgear DG814.

Thats another gay thing about the uni, in case like the above, we have to reg 3074 tcp seperate from udp :(

Btw, would you reccommend gold membership over silver? Is there a big difference?

Gold you can play multiplayer over Live and send more messages via the website.
The 1st month on Silver is at Gold service to tempt you to get it.  You can get cheap 1 yr gold by buying the Xbox 1 Live starter Pack + PGR2 for £24.99.  Cheaper than the £34.99 that Xbox360 Gold package.  I managed to pick up the £24.99 and then a 1yr 360 gold for £19.99 in the Game sale.

Right this might sound like a thick question but..

When playing online games, do they also use the same 3 ports?

That is correct. Multiplayer is only available on a gold membership.

In terms of incoming data, everything (so far) has used only those 3 ports.

I dont know if the Live! service makes use of NAT but even if it does, I would assume that your Uni connection supports it as you don;t have to define the outgoing ports you want to use :)

/me refers Nimrod to my quote of Xbox Support that says with a NAT no port forwarding is required.  I have not needed to forward any ports on my DG814.
