how exactly does that CIS thing work then?

Plug in, print.

Seriously, the one I bought came pretty much pre-assembled.  You just take out your old carts, plug in the new bank, charge ink and away you go.

b) arent lasers still sh*t for photo printing?

I have had both colour and B&W laser printers for quite a while, picture performance is reasonable on mine (a Minolta). I would say though that going mono laser with a colour inkjet might be preferable.

No, its 6/8 (depending on your model) reservoirs of ink which feed a block of cartridges.  The block (which is effectively six/eight carts molded together) just clips-in where your expensive single carts would.

For the cartridges that have chips, dont the CIS systems have chips that auto reset every time they power off or something too?

thats what Im doing. Sammy ML1500 laser (£50 printer, £10 refills on 3000 sheet carts, printing is basically as cheap as paper with this thing) for B&W, HP Photosmart inkjet for colour. Working well so far, both printers are as happy under Linux as they are under Windows and just keep churning out the printed goodness.

TBH though for really good (ie wall hanging) photo prints youre better off with someone like http://www.snapmad.com/browserTest.php anyway. I only really use my inkjet if I need prints in a hurry or want to proof print something.

got a samsung CPL500 here...
(colour lazer)

was £120 a couple of years ago !

It still is that much.  That is single handedly the worst Laser Colour I have come accross.  The worst parting being the seperate waste hopper that filled up and you cant wash out because of the laser that stop you from printing when it gets full.  I had 3 clients send them back.   Never sold them again.

HP 2600 laser jets are awfull also, expensive to run, break down.

If I want a midrange Laser Color I would go for either a Brother which are getting better and better or an Oki 52xx 58xx.

Rumour is in the trade HP are going to pull out of domestic all in one printers and focus on Business products.

ahhh, but youre not supposed to empty them... youre supposed to chuck em away and get a new one ?

I always just empty mine, and I had the same problem because I was re-using it - the laser fill level thing.... easy fixed with a bit of toilet roll... reach it inside and clean the bit the laser looks through ;)

tbh, I only bought it because is has a build in duplexer, which is something i waned ever since i was a little kid !
