Bad adverts
on: April 18, 2012, 07:55:26 AM
Just curious if anyone has any adverts they've seen lately, or remember, that to them are just annoying as hell?

I was watching Game of Thrones on SkyPlayer last night and the HTC One advert came up repeatedly:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/technology-video/9187992/HTCs-freefall-photoshoot-advert-for-the-One-X-mobile-phone.html

I find the add soooo bad and pointless. I mean, the bottom line is:

A PHOTOGRAPHY STUDENT recommends A PHONE.

So, he's a "photographer" using a phone for a photoshoot  ::)
But Photographer is too important, he's not, he's a student.  ::)

If they were going to get "joe blogs" to recommend their product I'd respect a lot more the recommendation of someone that would be using ALL the phones features, for their intended purpose, who has also made it in the world and is successful. Thoughts?

If someone have to put ads out repeatedly in order to sell a product, it  can not, IMHO,  be worth buying.

I absolutely hate the damn thing, just the other day I was watching this advert thinking what a load of pretentious bollocks that does absolutely nothing to sell anything the phone can do, I mean who buys a phone on the basis that some hipster cockend did a freefall with it? "As recommended/used by [insert jackanapes student name]" :disappointed:

I detest the fact that phones are now more about being trendy than being useful, functional and good value, what we've ended up with is a market saturated by sh*t phones because of this.

The adverts that annoy me are the ones created to be 5 minutes long. The most recent example is the new M&S one, I was unfortunate enough to be sat watching TV with my parents when this advert came on. I understand that adverts are there to sell, but it doesn't actually seem to sell anything. I'm sure everything the people wore, used, ate etc was all from M&S, but at the end of the day, all I remember is Gary Barlow singing and them being in a field of some sort.
Personally I prefer adverts like the H&M ones, they're only on for about 30 seconds at most, they showcase the product, tell you the price and tell you the brand. That's all that's needed.

There is one advert that I change the channel for it's duration, and that's any Go Compare advert with the fat singing twat! It's the only advert I have to do this for as it IS that bad..

The "Wonga" bloke annoys me a bit too, but not so much that I actually have to find the remote!

I can agree with that. There is also the we buy any car ones.

I'll add the Nissan Juke Built To Thrill one. The car looks terrible anyway, I'd almost prefer to be photographed dead under one than alive in one... It's horribly glitzy and terribly badly forged.

And we haven't even touched the misleading ones yet, in many ways those are even worse. "Look, this is a 99 year old granny, put on some facegobsh*te with unobtainium and givesyacancerum and twenty seconds later she looks to be in her twenties! Now she can bop with the young ones and ride a snowboard down a mountain doing tricks too! :w00t:

TV adverts don't bother me that much, I dont really watch enough TV for them to get annoying or repetative.

Radio adverts though are terrible, so poorly put together and cringe worthy, and I have the radio on in work all day everyday. :gag:

There is a skoda one that the moment that sounds like the fella is wanking while he is talking, also the Trebor competition one and loads more.

I feel sorry for Jean Claude van-damme.

However, I love that electric dreams EDF advert, especially when the scalextric crashes and he starts rocking out.

Sent whilst sat on the toilet.

In this day and age of PVR... why the hell are you watching the adverts?

Just go make a cuppa, pause it for a few minutes.... come back start watching and then fastforward through all the adverts :)

I don't watch enough regular TV for it to be a concern usually, my TV has standard Freeview so I wouldn't spend more money on a Freeview+/TVR type device unless I was desperate for Freeview HD, which I'm not for the sake of the odd film or BBC programme. I obtain the latest series stuff like Game of Thrones in HD so no ads there so really the only annoyance is when watching a film on TV, which isn't that often for me either anyway.

One thing with these +/PVRs, do you have to skip the ads manually or do some auto-skip?

No idea if some auto-skip. My freeview one cost me £20 about 3 years back. Was a "BYOD" one from big pockets. Just needed to shove up to a 137GB IDE drive in it.

Even if they don't auto-skip, you can still fast forward the breaks :D
