Some of you may have seen this book, would it really be possible to make one of those for around £250 do you think?

i very much doubt it, you could soend more than that on the wheels :o

with all 2nd hand engine, running gear, lights etc... you could save a few quid, but what about all the body pannels you need ? :o :dunno:

When the first ones were produced then you probably could have but just the body panneling is going to cost a lot more now.

the book isnt new, although it might be a reprint.

GREAT stuff!, you can actuly build one for £250, but you wont get a very good car.

of course not! it says you can make a "sports car" for £250, not a caterham 7

you could however make a bloody fast motor from scrapyard bits.....

When the book was written it was possible with careful buying and a bit of skill.

You can pick up very cheap Sierras with decent oily bits but totally shot bodies. You would have to mod the plans in the book to use Sierra bits but it is doable :) loads of kit cars use Sierras bits.

It certanly is.

Me and my dad build one a few years back.
Ill get some pics up later today.
We pulled it out of the garage yesterday and gave it a service and a good thrash round, OMG I almost forgot how much fun it was.

as apparently you live round the corner I can save you some time and lend you a copy of it.

The short version of that book is you can pick up an old ford (newer version uses a sierra as the old car is rare as hell these days) and almost build one for around £400 add another couple of hundred if you want it to be road legal in the UK as it now has pass through something called the Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) test which came in to force a couple of years back.

If you actually want a decent lotus 7 style car on a minimal budget I can highly recommend Robin Hoods based on the 2B series:

Youre looking around £3.5k by the time youve got the kit and sierra.  But its a damn fast car for the money and great fun. :)

What specialist tools would you need to do the £400 quid car? - Even if you could do it for 1k itd still be cool.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.
