Business cards
on: August 04, 2008, 17:58:48 PM
Basically I need to make some new business cards up. My current cards just have my contact details and "Photography, Sculpture, Animation" written on the back. These were fine for general contact detail things when lecturers needed my details etc, and were a great talking point as they had my best photos on the front and photos of various things Ive made etc.

However now Im straying into the realm of professionals etc, and also am most likely not going to be able to go to the BES conference this year, where my dissertation are being presented. However my supervisor is, and has said hell whack a bunch of cards on the front of the poster etc.

So, Im wondering what I should put on the back of the cards? Im basically networking and job seeking at the moment, and need something that should do after I land a job in the environmental science / ecology sector.

How does this look for the back of card:

Quote
Chris Moody BSc (Hons) 1st class
Ecologist

Home phone
Mobile
Email
The bit Im stuck on is the line after the name. Should I just take it out completely so its name and contact details, or if not, what should I say? "Ecology & consultancy" ? Any suggestions very welcome!

Dont put 1st class, thats silly.

Ive got several buisness cards pinned to the wall behind me.

Gernally they all contain the same infomation, only the visual aspect or the corporate identity changes.

Chirs Mood BSc (Hons)
Job Title / Role / Profession

(If applicable)
Address, Buinsess Line, Fax Line, Mobile,
E-mail, Website

There realy isnt that much complicated to them.  Just keep it clean and simple.

Aye. The difficulty is the profession bit, as I dont have a role or a full time job at the mo. A degree in environment & coastal management is kinda vague. Aspects of the industry I dabble in:

Ecology
Conservation
Spatial Analysis
Policy

I guess Ecologist is as good as any?

My lecturers seemed to think putting the 1st in was a good idea? Considering only 3 of about 100 people in the EGS department got one they arent that common, and as I dont have an MSc or PHD to my name yet its a good filler?

Putting 1st can make you look like a bit of a muppet I suppose; but more importantly Ive never ever seen a job that requires a first class degree, they all list first or upper second class (2:1) as a pre-requisite, there doesnt appear to be any real distinction between the two. Besides, if you apply for any jobs they can get a breakdown of your marks to see exactly what you scored so if people need to know youve gotten a first, theyll know, whilst one imagines most people who you are giving your business cards out to wont need to know then and there.

Incidentally never trust it when a lecturer gives you advice about the real world, because as great as they may be they do tend live in hermetically sealed bubbles very very far from reality at times.   -)

Aye, Ive noticed a contrast in opinions!

Cheers for the advice!

On the note of jobs not specifically requiring a first, Ive seen a fair few. However these tend to be the kind of jobs advertised in NewScientist where theyre a little out of my league I feel. However one does stick to mind which was the Plymouth Marine laboratory equivalent of the Cefas job I had the dilemma over. That required a first and paid 3k more as a starting wage! Murphies law I didnt have my results when that was advertised however!

tbh.. BSc itself looks stupid on a business card

but this isnt really a business card so to speak - its a tool for you to get a job - therefore Id include the 1st class honours bit too

Id sidestep the middle man and go straight for

Chris Moody
Ecological Consultancy

and start targetting companies that can use your services.
But yeah, putting even the BSc makes it look like that is all you have to offer, that having a degree is the best thing you can say about yourself when everyone and their dog has a BSc.
It's all fun and games until a 200' robot dinosaur shows up and trashes Neo-Tokyo… Again.

I would agree, its an advert, not a business card.

Dont require 1st class on there. If youre presenting a paper at a conference its obvious youve enough marbles to be worth someones time.
