Can you start a religion?
on: March 20, 2006, 22:38:47 PM
OK, so Scientology resulted from a bet L. Ron Hubbard had with someone over which could start a religion, but I was wondering if it is possible to start a religion if you get enough suitably suggestive yet vocal people to spread the word.

Offering hope or the promise of a better life is likely to snare a few people if you get the message out there. What if the things you suggest as part of your "religion" make people feel better, is it then a legitimate concern? Can you make people happier as a result of your experiment? If you do, is it, in fact, a Good Thing, even if the initial premise was not so philanthropic?

My dictonary says a Religion is an attitude or belief of supernatural forces or beings following a system of ethics, codes and values.

So i guess if you have all that, you can start a religion. I imagine they might be abit more difficult to start/grow as they where 2000 years ago though.

Really, was it on a bet? Hahahahahah!!

All I know about Scientology is the bit on Wikipedia about it - the Venu (is that it?) stuff sounds soooooo daft and sci-fi (yes kids, science Fiction), that I cant believe it has followers.

Like that Kabbalah stuff. No true religion (if there is such a thing) would require you to spend hundreds of pounds to progress in the faith.

Im sure its possible to start a religion. You just need to rope in a few very good con artists and a bunch of gullible people to start, and off you go...

EDIT as for making people happy - herrrmmmm, not sure about that one. People can be in a marriage which they think is blissful, while the other half is out cavorting and up to all sorts. One partner lives in ignnorance and is happy. Is this a good thing?

Scientology is a cult, not a religion. Mormonism and Jehovahs Witness are also cults. Cults are easy to start and a great way to have sex with a lot of young women, because once you have them under your charismatic leadership, theyll do anything and I mean anything. :D

Start a cult, indoctrinate a few followers, and watch as the freebies roll in. ;)

And another crazy get rich scheme sets into motion ;)

Good info on Scientology (as in the "theyre all nuts and indoctrinate people to their bizarre cult to make money" side of the argument) is at Xenu.net

i think you have to have many thousands of followers before a religion is recognized as a real religion though

I wouldnt even give it the term cult (no god or other spiritual figurehead) and it definitely isnt a religion either. At best its a self improvement group which preys on its own members.

still a cult:

Definition by secular cult opposition

Secular cult opponents define a "cult" as a religious or non-religious group that tends to manipulate, exploit, and control its members. Here two definitions by Michael Langone and Louis Jolyon West, scholars who are widely recognized among the secular cult opposition:

Cults are groups that often exploit members psychologically and/or financially, typically by making members comply with leaderships demands through certain types of psychological manipulation, popularly called mind control, and through the inculcation of deep-seated anxious dependency on the group and its leaders.1

"A cult is a group or movement exhibiting a great or excessive devotion or dedication to some person, idea or thing and employing unethically manipulative techniques of persuasion and control (e.g. isolation from former friends and family, debilitation, use of special methods to heighten suggestibility and subservience, powerful group pressures, information management, suspension of individuality or critical judgement, promotion of total dependency on the group and fear of [consequences of] leaving it, etc) designed to advance the goals of the groups leaders to the actual or possible detriment of members, their families, or the community."

We can probably agree that theyre a nasty group regardless of labeling.

This may be complete rubbish, but Im under the impression that in the UK, in order to have a belief system recognised as a religion a particular percentage of people on the census have to declare it as their religion i.e. the Jedi fiasco?

So if anyone want to start a religion do what the Jedi campainers did?

In 2001 I lived in Blyth Valley, apparentley there are 267 Jedi living there.
