Floppy Disk ...
on: August 14, 2007, 00:49:28 AM
I just formatted my main desktop PC and began installing a fresh Windows XP ... only to remember I dont have a floppy drive in it to load the SATA RAID drivers.

Further searching revealed that out of 3 desktops and 2 laptops I dont have any 3.5" floppy drives :-(

Off to the scrapyard for me tomorrow!

If you have an old IDE drive you can install onto that - without the SATA connected. Once you have finished installing the drivers fit the SATA and copy it over with ghost or another package.

xp can only load external drivers from a floppy, thanks to the brilliant foresight of microsoft engineers.

To be fair, its not exaclty asking a lot.

This is why a USb floppy drive is allways usefull.

does it work from a usb floppy?

I had always assumed it would need to be on the internal controler for xp setup to see it. If it does work from a usb floppy drive then yes I can see that would be a handy thing to have around.

Yes it does as XP loads the USB drivers.

Apparantly it does not work with some chipsets though.  I havent not been able to before.

mm, cant remember the name of the program.... but you can make an iso of your xp cd, add the drivers too it, then burn it and bingo, no floppy needed :-)

I hadnt even considered it since I havent loaded windows onto this PC for so long. Completely slipped my mind that I needed one.

I am borrowing a USB floppy drive tomorrow.

Im guessing the almighty Vista doesnt have this problem.

I havent tired it vista with raid yet.  I imagine though there is going to be a extensive cabinet of driver compared to XP though, which was extensive enough at the time.

Vista is ludicrously easy to load.  Though extreemly picky about what you can and cannot do.

depends, Vista doesnt support my chipset out of the box (AMD690).  Doesnt support it on anything but the most basic I/O.  Even the NIC isnt supported :D
