FML OEM software.... non genuine
on: July 14, 2015, 22:31:40 PM
So....

I bought some OEM software from Amazon marketplace... like a chump. I went for Windows 7, I like Windows 7, I've used Windows 7 at work for years... frankly Windows 8 looks like a complete abortion so I was glad Windows 7 was still available OEM.

Anyway fast forwards a few months, I turn on my PC and I get a message + black backdrop and.... my version of Windows is non genuine!!!!! WTF

Time to contact the **** who sold it to me on Amazon.... write a strongly worded mail and... error - the seller is no longer on Amazon... what a surprise.

So phone Amazon customer service, nope too late... have to go for a refund via my credit card. Fine I'll charge back via credit card, looks like I'll have to pay a few more $$$ to Microsoft.... but no, of course, I can't get a new license as they're not doing Windows 7 licenses any more, my only option is to upgrade to Windows 8

FML!!!!!!!!!

I bought one not long ago, still readily available as oem if your building a new system or putting it onto a new system which you are really, about £76 on Scan.

Out of interest how much did it cost on Amazon? I guess cheap which is why you went for it.

Regardless of what they tell you, you should read terms and conditions, when i used to sell for a company on Amazon their returns policy was outrageous and you could send stuff back open boxed upto 6 months after purchasing.

All the above aside, you purchased (unknown to you) illegal pirated software on Amazon, surely the onus is on them to sort this out, or are they simply outside of the law?

well they've said they have a 90 day policy and after that I should charge back via my credit card... tis AMEX so shouldn't be an issue getting my money back

though on the other hand I do have possession of the bit of paper with the key along with the disk, though this key wasn't sealed or anything so I suspect they could have used it themselves on other systems.... I wonder if MS can do anything given that I seem to have the 'legit' one and anyone else using the same key technically doesn't?

I paid £40...

I guess I could go for another OEM windows 7 disk and just hope the same thing doesn't happen again - it would be more reassuring if the key itself was concealed in unopened packaging to remove to possibility of them having already used it

£40 is nearly half the price of an OEM so that should give you an idea of the products legality :P

I presume these guys are a bit dodgy too?

https://softwaregeeks.co.uk/product-category/windows-7/?gclid=CMy4hfHX38YCFSsKwwodfQcOQQ

am not quite sure what to go for... whether to get windows 8 and the free upgrade or just windows 7

I certainly don't want to use windows 8

(will be installing linux on another partition bear)

this one I'd be fairly confident isn't dodgy:

http://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer-hardware/all/software/microsoft-windows-7-oem

All the cheap ones are either dodgy or they are using either single use oem licences they pull from corporate machines, or licences that are generally tagged to computers like Dell / IBM etc already and reselling them.

The OEM on a well known store is your best option but it is £70 or as egg said go the Windows 10 route

so presumably the single use oem ones have already been used on corporate machines and they're selling them again? So presumably I'd just get the issue from microsoft again if I went with one of those?

Thats how i always interpreted it because they were already branded Dell / IBM etc, it was software bundled with system builds, the ones you see on Ebay for £30-40 like this seem to be just the disc in a sleeve cover with the code inside and not sealed. I assume they have already been tagged to machines, the only way to go about it is buy off a long standing Ebay seller and if it goes tits up in 3 months you got something to fall back on.

I only ever buy proper software now, you get what you pay for, but you got to think do you want to pay £70+ for an end of life OS, me personally i'm happy sticking with 7 for now.

Seriously?

On Sunday I fell though a factory roof, straight down 20+ft and landed on my head

Skull is in 4 bits and held together by staples
Left shoulder is broken
Thing left shoulder fixes too is broken
Collar bone is broken
Right arm was broken but they operated on it while I was awake and watching so that's fixed now
8 broken ribs
4 buggered bones in back
2 in neck
Eyes don't work properly
Can't sit up for more than 5 min without passing out

Yesterday 2 nurses put me in the shower, I've got no idea what happened but the next thing I knew I was on the floor hyperventilating with 5 nurses trying to get me up, I covered myself, the walls, the shower and everything else in there in my own sh*t, which I painted on by hand caveman style

Today I opened a bottle of pop and my middle finger snapped, I didn't want to tell anyone so I used my blanket to hook a commode and used it as a wheel chair to steel a roll of rape to fix my finger.... By the time I got the tape ready I realised there was nothing wrong with my finger

My point is, I'm a total cabbage

And I still wouldn't buy a copy of windows on Amazon

I'll post photos if you dont believe me.
