Healthy snack recipes?
on: August 03, 2008, 13:35:20 PM
Ive taken it upon myself to try cooking something new each week. Because of being at home and my parents doing all the shopping and my dad doing all the cooking my window for trying things out without getting the old "Theres xxxx in the fridge that needs eating, youre wasting food" is pretty much sunday evenings when my dads had enough cooking for the day and nothings sorted for dinner.

At the moment the last month and a bit have had me doing some pretty unhealthy, but awesome, recipes, these being:

Banana & chocolate chip cookies
Cheese straws with marmite
Cinnamon shortbread
Chocolate chip fudge brownies

Pretty much all the above feature like a 1:1 ratio of fat/butter to non-greasey ingredients. So, does anyone have any recipes for things which are more healthy and are nibblish? Im doing quantities that cover me, my family, and colleagues at work (best way to find out if things are any good = use a dozen different people as lab rats!)

And obviously Im not looking for a full meal like a casserole or anything, just cakes, biscuits etc that can be eaten with coffee on a morning or for lunch perhaps?

Malteser ice cream?

1 bag of maltesers.
1 Tin of condensed milk

Beat milk for 10 years until its frothified completely (Takes sodding ages! AGES AND AGES AND AGES!)

Crush maltesers

Sprinkle maltesers into milk (BEAAAAATT MOREEE!!)

Add a table spoon or two of Mascarpe sugar (youll know what I mean when you see it, its brown and its not demarerea) :D

MORE BEEEAAAAATTTTING! (and add some vanilla essence at this point)

Freeze for an eternity.

Voila, quite low on the fat content but tasty ice cream.

Ive taken to toasted sandwiches done with paste/spread under the grill.

Toast one side of two slices of bread, put the paste on the other, gently warm it under the grill, then stick a second slice of bread on top and toast that.

Ive been using wholemeal bread and vegetarian pate, really nice, and healthy :)

pah!

fry 1 large pack of bacon (all in the same pan, all at once, - you can taste the difference)
grate 1 lump of smoked cheese, about the amount you would normally use for 2 sandwiches

slice of bread, with the bacon on top, then the cheese, then the other slice of bread....stick it in a sandwich toaster for a few min....

and damn that tastes good !

and theyre bloody filling too.... tho probably not very healthy...

Bah, nothing beats the sausage, egg and cheese sandwich! As the name suggests, 2 sausages (cut in half(helps stop them falling out)), egg on top, and a slice of processed cheese for extra unhealthiness.

Only problem with these suggests are, theyre not really preparable the day before and sahreable around the coffee table the next day!

Tomorrows recipe will be a carrot cake...

I thought this was the healthy snack thread, not the what I think I can get away with cause Im trying to eat healthy thread.

Healthy snacks are easy, just try and involve some sort fruit or salad as a good part of the meal, even a vegitarian curry is a good snack.  Though if you are being proper about it, a few suggestions.

Grapes and cheese
Avocado on toast
(Some Form Of) Tomato On Toast
Yoghurt and honey
homemade smoothie
Pasta (Arabiatta)
Salmon

A favourite of mine is using Pita bread, throw in some strips of chicked, lettuce, tomato, fat free dressing

4x big slices smokey bacon. Fry.

Put 2x bread on a grill, put on brie on each slive and toastify it.

Add black pepper.

Mix and add Daddys.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

Hmm sounds good - and bonus marks for use of the word toastify!

Career, Wife, Mortgage... my sig was better when it listed guitars and PC's and stuff!

Considering the amount of calories in a typical serving... its healthy in terms of calorific content. Sure its not packed with your vit E, B, C, and all that nonsense well it has quite a bit of calcium in it so I suppose thats good, but its quick, easy, low calorie and will satisfy most peoples sweet tooth.

Ive been going for the Wraps at work recently, theyre good for a snack or part of a meal. Or you could make 3 or so and they are a meal.

We are also lucky enough to have at work a George forman fat reducing grilling machine, so chicken is nice on it. But I suppose you could get some cooked chicken and add to salad and some sort of houmous on the wrap too.

Ive even put some noodles in the wrap, with the lettuce.

Asda do some nice herb wraps for I think around £1.60 for 7 iirc.
