Lake district for a week
on: April 16, 2009, 12:18:58 PM
Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for peaks & places to go. Heading up next Saturday for a week with a schoolfriend of mine. Were planning on doing Scafel and Helvelyn, but thats as far as we have gone on the itinerary.

Problem we have is weve got a cottage, and given the fact were driving up from the south coast, Well get there about 6-7pm on the Sat, and have to leave by 10am on the following sat, so only have 6 days really in the lakes. 4-5 Days walking, and 1-2 days recovery (depending on how were fairing I guess) so could do with some suggestions for when were not going up the peaks, as well as suggestions of peaks that are either awesome scenery, interesting walks, and importantly, quiet...

What type of thing you looking to do?  I live less than an hour from Windermere, and Ive lost count of the time Ive spent up there.

just came back from Windermere area and my first time up a peak, we did Fairfield from Rydal hall and back, but know know we should have started on a simpler peak

if you plan to use the steamers often the freedom of the lake ticket last 24hrs from time of purchase, so if you buy it a little late you can get two days usage, the aquarium at lakeside is ok, but most of the fish can be seen in any good fish shops,

Planning on doing mostly walking and the fells more than touristy things, though I might be tempted to visit the aquarium as I remember when I was little I bought some stick insect eggs from there :| My sister and grandmother were thinking I was mad the other day when I was asking if there was a zoo or something, as I could remember that and they couldnt!

Im pretty sure were overestimating our abilities, and will at some point get too knackered to do more walking without a break, but we will see!

have done challenge events there - around 70 miles (and havent been able to walk for a week afterwards)

Keswick is nice. My cousins boarded at school there and I stayed with them in the summer the odd time

Having seen that gigapixel panoramic site, I have now figured out how to secure my tripod to my backpack, so have gone from likely just using my 10mp compact and walking stick/monopod, to probably taking my DSLR on most walks and the tripod, as lets face it, the lakes does lend itself to panoramas :D

For goodness sake, you dont need a tripod for outdoor mountain photography unless its twilight. Just make sure you get enough overlap between shots for panoramas. And make sure you use AE lock (having chosen the average exposure needed amongst the lot).

For example, this is composed of maybe 6 shots at 1/400 at f10:

Well it depends on how much of a camera noob one is, and how shakey their hands are, and how prone they are of as they are spinning on the spot, changing the camera angle...

(All things I suffer from...)

a standard tripod is not ideal for panos, youre actually better off hand holding and concentrating on what youre doing.

Ok, thanks for that, Ill maybe just take my walking/monopod in that case :D

Though Id have thought a tripod would allow you to concentrate on what youre doing once set up, if you get what I mean. Though from reading your post in the other thread I understand why you say this now :D

if the subject is far enough away the paralax wont notice and a tripod will work fine, I just hate carrying the darned things TBH!!! :)
