Forgive me for being stupid, but if all that gubbins (including the gunpowder) had been removed, how did it explode? If its 40mm how did it cause so much damage?

Erm... its bloody hard to set off a center fire cartridge. if you hit a nail into it, maybe, or left it in a fire yeah... but the guy said it was deactivated so how on earth?! wtf...

An easy mistake to be honest, I used to be given old shells and stuff as a kid from my dad from when he was back in the TA, they were drilled out (hole in the bottom) but I used to use them as bombs to blow up my gi joe soldiers and tanks.

Im guessing it was a grenade doo-dah, the same thing happening with a teacher - he blew his hand off with a deacivated round.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

You give cap guns to kids, and you give kids sparklers.

There are many dangerous things that have more of a risk of causing damage, than a blimmin deactivated round.

Its deactivated, the only thing it should pose is a swallow or stabbing risk.

i would let kids have caps or sparlkers unattended either

A shell has cordite powder in the outer case to propel it out of the barrel, it also has an explosive warhead. To innert one the fuse should be removed and the explosive extracted and then the cap removed from the base and that end emptied too. An innert or used cap can then replace the original and a fake or innert fuse used to replace the one on the warhead.

Missing one end means that you still have a live weapon but it should take something like hitting it with a hammer to set the thing off.

if you remove the primer, and the propellant you have nothing to go boom. I dont know if that 40mm shell was a HE round, but if it wasnt then theres nothing left for it to go boom!!

yeah - would have thought it would be more likely if it was a 40mm grenade tbh...
