although the weather man assures me that it hasnt, it has in fact been snowing here more or less all day. This is getting dull now!

Indeed, but because of that you are prepared for it with the previously discussed winter tyres and probably rather better and more practiced low traction driving skills. I am board of getting up in the morning and deciding its not worth the risk of driving to work when I can work on my laptop.
