Author Topic: Motorway congestion + lets remove a lane, and make it for cars with more than 1 occupant  (Read 2509 times)

There is a news article on the BBC news site about First car-share lane to be built

What do people think about this? Do you like me think this could be daft if it is implemented in the way they do some of these systems to reduce congestion? FFS they put a sodding bus lane on a motorway... what next a cycle path!

I think stopping lorries and caravans etc overtaking each other in conjested areas is much more effective.

Maybe a stay in lane policy too.

Id like to see transport of goods maybe kept down during peak hours too. But that would take some implementing

A) use [ url=www.xyz.com]Your text here[/url] for links
B) Its only being impemented on short (10 mileish) stretches
C) Busses produce more polution in london than if every bus user took teir own car... busses are carp and there should NEVER be a bus lane on a mottorway!

[EDIT]
D) Flexible speed limits with cameras to inforce lower limits ONLY seem to work well (m42)

Do you have any empirical data for that? As that smells severely of bullsh*t.

I could find the report i read.... but im at work.... apparently busses on some routes in london were only carrying a small number of passengers and producing a whole load of emmissions, therefore the people on the bus would have produced less emissions per person if they had been driving their own, newer, cars.

Oh, just re-read that quote.... should have read

HOV lanes work. Ive used them in Seattle, Chicago, and here in Butcher Holler with good impressions. Especially in Seattle, where youd call up a buddy to see if they needed to go do some similar errands as the HOV lane was so much faster.

Its not a matter of debate on whether they work, they do. No need to enforce them except during peak hours tho.

Ok that may be true on certain routes, but I would guess that it will be a limited number of routes (quite possibly a lot of right routes) which are not primarily their for reduction of traffic/pollution but as a service, eg who wants to drive their car home from central London whilst drunk on a friday night etc.

Ill bet if you took the whole london bus network and worked out the difference in pollution if everybody took their own cars then the buses would be much more efficient. Having said that I dont actually like taking the bus and if I could afford it / it was practical I would like to drive everywhere myself.

I have voted yes in peak times because I think it will help, but I agree with brummie about the trucks. Manys the time I have crawled for ages on the M1 at 50ish, stuck behind a couple of racing lorrys, finally got out into the fast lane only to find theres not a vehicle to be seen in front of them for miles.

My main problem is that they have to be policed properly, Im sick of seeing normal cars take advantage of bus/commercial vehicle lanes.

TBH these should be covered by cameras and any car driver taking advantage fined but they have to be very clearly marked as no car lanes.

If they get those right then OK.

They are part of the sunday drivers squad, hand picked and financed by the government to slow everyone down and irritate you until you give up driving...
