I miss my 1st car, but I think anyone who gets their 1st car should spend no more than £500 on it as they will crash, scratch or bump it. 98% Guranteed.

Glad you got somthing sensible, good to park!

I was in town yestarday and some guy spent about 10 mins trying to get the big VW Tourag into a largish space, he failed and drove off.

With hindsight Id go the other way.  Noone should spend less than a grand on there first car for the same reasons.

The cost of buying a car is so negliigble compared to running it and if youre likely to crash you dont want to be sat in a tin box.  Too many friends died in crashing sh*t £5-600 cars (Vauxhall Novas, old fiestas, Pugeot 205s).  For a tiny bit more the people who bought puntos, bigger old cars and newer models walked away even from rolling them, etc.

I had a sh*t vauxhall nova but luckily never crashed.  I would NEVER go back to a sh*t car and sure as hell wouldnt put my kids in one.

My first car was a 1957 Volvo PV, with a roaring 60 Hk DIN 1600cc B-16 engine, 3 speed with 1st gear unsynced.
Mine was dark green :)

Between the overt ***ism and the obvious inexperience with said engine--personally, I just cant get enough Edd. :D

Ive had a couple 3 cyl cars. Both were silky smooth, no different than a good 4 cyl, just with a very distinctive idle. Indeed, Ive owned the 4cl and 3cl Daihatsu Charades and the 3 was markedly smoother. Its actually pretty legendary, especially in turbod form, among the rally set.

I wish they still sold them in the states. :( Id get a new one in a heartbeat. People used to make fun of my wittle hatch, so Id make them drive it, and theyd be sold. Very Mini-like, but even better as it was Japanorific. :D Tin can-like in an accident, but you cant have everything. :D Only car I ever owned where I consistently got notes under my wiper for offers to buy it. Who wouldda thunk it?

My left nut to get my Charade (totaled by a redneck in a taxi) and my 68 Saab back. I only sold the Saab as everybody kept warning me what a liability it would be--but dangit, in retrospect it ran like a brand new car, and I sold it for a measly $500. Stupid me.

You say that as if half your friends have died in cars - are you living in the most dangerous area in the world or something ?

Id argue that the paranoia of driving really gimpy cars like my Charades has made me a better, more paranoid driver than if Id had something bigger and safer. This all can be summed up in Johnny Cashs "Boy Named Sue" theory of personal evolution.

Hard data shows that places with mandatory helmet laws have indeed had increased injury reported by cyclists.

:P

Ergo--the US, with all of its humongous vehicles, has a motor vehicle death rate higher than many countries that drive Fiat 500s held together with string.

You can get strong cars for under £500.

COUGHvolvoCOUGH

they might not have street cred but it might save the drivers life if cocooned in a sweedish tank. Unless they hit a VW bus head on.
