Ive been thinking of getting a vintage late 70s-80s 240 actually, but the 5 speeds are getting rare around, and the old Volvo auto-boxes suck. Still, its the car that Click and Clack recommend for beginners.

Too many friends died in crashing sh*t £5-600 cars (Vauxhall Novas, old fiestas, Pugeot 205s).

You say that as if half your friends have died in cars - are you living in the most dangerous area in the world or something ?

It was yorkshire not Newcastle but point taken.  My girlfriend and her brother died in a car crash just after she passed her test.  In the same week 2 friends from school died in seperate incidents.

A couple of friends from uni have died in car crashes at the start when they were still in their school days cars.  1 on my course who Id been working alongside for 2 years.

My sister put her friend through the windscreen of her car when she rolled her cinquecento on the night she passed her test.  She didnt die but she was pretty messed up for a long time.  That was a new car and it ended up through a hedge on its roof after hitting a tree stump on the side of the road.  An older car would have crumpled.

So yeah - all in all Ive not had good experiences.  My girlfriend, 4 very close friends and several other mates from school and uni.  Its one of the hazards of having quite a few friends and living in big open areas where you have to drive everywhere.  The people who walked away were in either big old cars (like Volvos) and modern small cars (new fiestas, puntos, etc).  Work out how many people on these forums have had a serious crash and youd be suprised.

I only had one young person around me kick the bucket when we were starting driving. She shot herself in the mouth with a shotgun. The yearbook shows her in a group picture of the French club wearing a scarf and holding a sign that says, "Im cold" in French. Creepy!

Not really, Katie dieing was pretty appauling and shook us all up.  The rest are what happens when youve moved school every 2 years since you were born.  You have a lot of friends and you see the same sh*t going on.

You can throw in two lads I lived with overdosing on the same night when they necked half a jam jar of broken ecstacy tablets for a laugh in our front room if you want a pretty messed up way of dieing.  Its called knowing lots of people.

Theyre a tiny proportion of mates but it adds up.  Out of all the people Ive been close friends with whove died theyve nearly all been in car crashes late at night/early morning in sh*t cars.  the others were 2 overdoses and 1 with lukemia.  The number whove written off a car must be huge tho and most of them probably survived because they were in there parents cars or crashed in later years of uni when they had better cars.

3 cylinders lick balls!

theres so much vibration from the engine even WITH a balancing rod

Many years ago (in the 70s) I learned that a 3 cyl is smoother than 4 cyl.
Its because if I remember, the crank is in different positions when on the firing stroke in a 3, but in tdc or bdc on a 4.
My 1969 BSA Rocket 3, is as the name suggests a 3 cylinder.

There is a reason for car insurance to be higher for people 18-21. Many boys with a new license and a car are stupid drivers who wants to go fast but does not have the experience to do so.

Once I return I shall buy a cheaper car, such as a Corsa. I dont really need a (relatively) expensive small car.

Nah, you should import yourself something very American on the way back, like a Chrysler Cordoba--done up in ghetto style with spinners and  metal flake paint. 8)
