Working weekends
on: August 16, 2009, 00:50:08 AM
Been in work since 10am this morning doing a dress rehearsal go-live on one of our Category A applications, was meant to finsh at 1pm and come back again at 10pm but that break never happened. Cant see any end in sight.

First weekend ive had ruined since i came here though so i guess I shouldnt complain. Anyone else letting the work/life balance slip the wrong way?

I seem to end up working at all hours, Im trying to get the balance back but the need for some more money has meant me igniting the midnight molotovs for a couple of months.

I did three hours of tedius data entry this evening and felt shattered, Ill be working in the day next week AND doing this on top every evening. Not a fun week ahead!

I think I was about 12 years old the last time I had a weekend off....   kinda sucks...  but you get used to it :S

did 6am till 2pm today, will be about the same tomorrow, but have to change the pads all round and tighten up the handbreak cable on the 6.5tonner and then swap a wheel on a transit in the afternoon...

edit: oh and a few hours sorting out paperwork for the DEFRA inspection on monday morning !

My weekend is Monday & Tuesday. :)

Got work today, but Ive just been woken up by my asshat housemates who couldnt sleep, so they decided to have a very loud discussion outside my door.

^^^ - thats not likely to go down well in banking - granted HR will probably give it to you but if some of your bonus is discretionary Im pretty sure your boss will be taking note that you were the union type who demanded his clocking off time right in the middle of a critical go-live... future chances of working on any decent projects in future = slim, chance of being given some of the more tedious less essential work = high. Going from working on say the latest installation of whatever trading system they use in the front office to say working on some internal IT project for HR/finance - (something super exciting like testing the time/expenses system for the next 6 months....) can happen to people fairly rapidly if you start upsetting management like that.

I work 12 hour nights doing 4-on 4-off.  Better than it used to be at 10 hours and 4-on 3-off.  Way more time to myself, and way more time to do things I want to!

depends what you do though - if youve got a skill set & youre happy with the level youre at & just want to progress laterally picking up new skills etc.. then its fine - ditto if youre contracting

if youre some 20 something with relatively less experience then you prob want to progress a bit higher before you can start getting comfortable and not have to worry so much - especially in say banking

I do as little as possible. No interest in overtime, oncall rota or progression.. some people are happy just flipping burgers, not everyone wants to work on the tills.

Seems to be something I have to accept in this industry, as Dave said. Looking to progress my career at the moment.

People who only work the hours they are contracted for dont last long.

2nd/3rd line onsite support.

with the same company for 5 years..

guess thats the difference between hardware & software.. which I have  absolutely no interest in.
9-5 stuck in an office 5 days a week, full of mostly wankers, women with fat ankles who rather close the windows than put a cardigan on.
Having a boss in direct face to face contact.

Nope, Ill stick to my car, the motorways & starting late/finishing early routine.

I used to work 80/90 hours a week as an IT manager, now I work 10-30 hours a week as an IT security consultant.

Im learning far more, have more exposure to new tech, have much, much better career prospects, and it gets about 100% more salary.

I dont start before 10 or 1030, EVER, and I tend to finish at 2 or 3 - or sooner some days. Havent worked a full week in 2 years.

The only down side is the occasional travelling.

Not many companies like ours though.

when can I start ?

I work my ass off so that I have the option to scale back in the future.... the problem is... i keep thinking a little bit longer... just a little bit more... just get this sorted out first etc. etc.....
