WTF: Copenhagen Riots
on: March 04, 2007, 17:12:47 PM
Heres all I know: building in central Copenhagen was squatted for many years and used as sort of a youth community center. It was bought ten years ago by some fundy evangelicals, they decide suddenly that they want the Che posters gone and the kids to leave, kids refuse, cops go commando on their asses, Europe reacts by sending idle anarchists and ravers to create havoc.

Several things that I dont understand about this. Well, I first of all barely understand squatting. I believe first in property rights. Now, we have laws in cities over here that force the auction of seemingly abandoned structures--which is a far better way to deal with urban "missing tooth" syndrome. So squatting is the more anachistic way of dealing with such unused property. Fine. Its by no means a noble thing in my eyes.

When the landowners want the kids off of their property, then the little bastards should leave. The Danish police dealt with this the right way, IMHO--you dont pussyfoot around, dealing with situations like this effectively require SWAT style efficiency.

But the questions remain. WTF is up with the property owners? Are they total fundy whack jobs that basically created this whole situation when it could have been dealt with more smartly? And what is up with the disgusting behavior of the protestors? Im a fan of MLK style non-violent protest if at all possible. Yes, there may be a time when civil disobedience requires more muscle--but this just looks like a bunch of wankers were looking for an excuse to torch cars and throw bricks.

Its the normal response to police finally getting tough on them. TBH I think a bit more toughness might be useful in a few circumstances. there have been at lrast a hundred arrests but it hasnt even been visible on the BBC website.

You mean like against the baby murderers of the Abortion clinics or Greenpeace?

As for squatting, it means living in a building that you dont own, usually an unused one but there have been families who have come back from their hols to find their house has become a squat in the meantime. Usually the place is trashed.

Why are you so against christian groups? It isnt like they all are clones of the US ones

Uh, no. More like when you have situations like Kent State and the government has completely gone whack.

Perhaps less polyester, but fundamentalism is fundamentalism. I grew up around the Swedish version, as Bear is well aware of. Its nothing but a veneer for standard cult type mind control.

There are exceptions, and they are dealt with. The national leader of evangelicals over here wanted to focus on relieving poverty and environmental concerns--both of which have a strong basis in Jesuss message. However, he was removed because the evangelicals want to focus on discrimination against gays and the fight against abortion, things that really have nothing to do with real Christian philosophy. Its about control and sex. Its not exclusively American either, I give you the history of Ireland to examine.

If useable houses are used as write offs and nothing else but there is a need of housing espially I can agree witth orderly squatting (mostly in Amsterdam there housing is scarse)
I do not know the hole story of the Nörrebro riots but it could probably been delt with in a more civil way.

Swedish police supplied veichels to the Danish police.
