Getting worried about updates for every little bit of crap thats wrong with windows is pointless, as long as you have a decent NAT/firewall and AV just leave it to it. Ive not updated at all since installing.

After doing "ethical hacking" as part of my information assurance module in uni, I now religiously patch. Its shocking just how easy it is to gain access to an unpatched computer.

Disagree. Updates and patches have been known to bring down whole networks before now and personally on an important business system I think youd be crazy to install either until its been released for a awhile and thoroughly tested. If youve got a decent f/w and AV solution in place you dont need to patch software to stay safe - simple as that. And by decent firewall Im not talking about sh*tty software firewalls. Companies with important data they cant afford to have stolen should be putting in Pix, Checkpoint, Nokia, Fortinet etc.. solutions end of story. Sacking the IT guy because theyve penny pinched and not bought the proper kit will only lead to a nice court case and payout.

Mmmmm sort of half and half here, you should apply all patches but after applying to test network and seeing all is well. Decent FW/AV will keep you safe while you do said testing

well thats silly, if it can keep you safe while your testing it should be able to keep you safe indefinitely.. by that logic

Exactly. I worked selling managed security products for nearly 3 years and the big clients would piss themselves at people worrying about software patches because installing them willy nilly as soon as theyre released is far more dangerous than not having them at all. Yes theyre an extra layer of protection once proven to be safe and reliable but if the hardware firewalls etc.. are in place properly then you cant get past them to reach the software glitches so theyre not an issue.

well i shouldnt of used the word safe there, delays / reduces attacks (some people would just give up) - End of the day if someone REALLY wanted something there isnt much you can do to stop them (apart from removing box from all network and lock it in a safe... eg. Root CA)

Purest bull.

If youre in a company environment using a PC they should have a dedicated IT infrastructure to prevent any need for constant patching and updates.

If youre a home user, you have nothing of merit anyone could want to hack your system for anyway.

We all know most of these patches fix trivial bugs or rare memory leaks in areas of windows you never use. Ive yet to see a system that required patching for anything other than the RPC exploit, and even that was prevented nicely with a simple firewall.

Bring on teh 1337 h4><, Im really worried.

youd have a test environment and then a WSUS or similar system to deploy them company wide anyway

Even in a business environment where, as you say, you will have WSUS or simular to manage patching you will still update your base RIS image  by slipstreaming so that machines are secured against known exploits as soon as theyre deployed - hence it is still worth doing.

Last night I was making a new RIS image hence having to slipstream all the updates available for XP w. SP2.

Having thought for a minute or so longer on the subject, I bet the same religious patchers are the ones who complain Windows is unstable and need to reinstall every 3 months.
