Dave, just taking income tax doesnt show the full picture, we have VAT, so add another 17.5% onto a hell of a lot of stuff, and other taxes too.

Exactly, but the point is that it varies so you just cant go off one tax. UK car use tends to have slightly lower tax than the average tax for Western European countries, but peeps still scream about tax levels on motoring.

Im sure the price of apples varies a bit too but in the grand scheme of things it means f*** all tbh...

if the average salary is 10k GBP less and income tax (fairly major expenditure) is 50% more I dont really care if their sales tax id 12% as opposed to 17.5%

The point is you need the toatal amount of tax and to take into account its relative value. Using bits does not provide an accurate picture.
