Air travel
on: March 02, 2012, 17:07:49 PM
Doing some fieldwork in portugal and Spain at the end of the month. Taking camera kit, it's pretty muc my entire hand luggage allowance so I am pondering puttin it in the cargo in a crocodile crate. Question is will the camera be safe or does it all need to be in a pressurised hold etc?

i would take my camera stuff on the plane & put clothes in the hold... cheaper to replace lost clothes if they go missing than some nice glass

Yep, I wouldn't dream of taking any expensive kit like that and putting it in the hold, carry it on you definitely. I was in Munich last month with my mate and he bought his laptop, camera, lenses, video camera and a host of other gubbins with him, it all went in his backpack taken on as hand luggage. You might find travel insurance won't cover things like that in the hold anyway, thinking about it.

I have dedicated camera insurance that covers me for travel in Europe and includes all my kit. It would be packed in crocodile crates so should be pretty secure and padlocked too...

Still worth taking on as hand luggage, the handlers are not known for their careful handling of baggage and a number of them have been known to acquire passenger's belongings. TBH I consider them about as trustworthy as a bunch of politicians.

If you don't take it on as hand luggage, remember to keep your memory cards on you though, in case it gets "lost"

You can replace the equiptment, just not the photos

Thankfully I've just checked and the airline (easyjet) doesn't have a weight restriction on hand luggage, just size, so I might be able to do it. I think my bag and all the bits weigh close to 10kg :S Some airlines restrict to 8kg :(

The rule with easy jet is that it must be a single man lift and fit in the lockers.

I've packed a roll bag with about 35kg of stuff before now. The locker looked like it was about to come down on our heads but they let us do it after complaining about it.

I don't do that much air travel but did last year took quite a big bag with all my camera gear in, they didn't even check the size or weight of it.  As long as you don't go over the top and its obviously a big or heavy bag you should be fine.

I'd definetly avoid putting anything camera/lens related in the hold, even if its only a slim chance that something bad could happen to it I'd still rather avoid that risk as much as possible its just too expensive to replace or repair damaged gear.
