Annoyed at myself
on: November 03, 2006, 01:38:13 AM
Went for a drive earlier, because my camera was feeling a bit unloved lately. I snapped this shot I like, but I annoyingly left the ISO at 800, it was a long exposure shot so it could of been waaaay lower, and now this otherwise perfect shot is riddled with too much noise.

grrrr.

Also I forgot my full size tripod so was using my mini tripod, so my other shots looked crap aswell.

Darn.. You can still see the potential of an amazing shot through the grainyness though!

Go back there again and try to retake it :)

Remind me, is it high or low ISO for low light?

ooooo bad luck, nice shot too! I hate it when that happens, did it myself a couple of weeks ago except I was set to ISO 3200

jamieL, with a DSLR you should always shoot on the lowest ISO you can get away with. High ISOs are for when you need more shutter speed but cant gather enough light by opening the aperture up. The noise gets worse the longer the exposure too, so while the shots I took yesterday at 800ISO and 1/400th in a fairly bright sports hall look ok, this shot is ruined at the same ISO because the exposure time was longer.

Yeah its annoying when you forget about thinks like that, sometimes you see straight away and can retake the pic, but sometimes not.

Your just gonna have to go back and retake it, at least you can go back, its not like it was a one off event.

my usual mistake is I forget the exposure compensation is on and end up over/under exposing a whole load of shots.

Punk. May be worth a quick try to despeckle it, although its probably not going to work.

Also learn to move about and take several photos rather than just one, even if you take dozens and delete most of them you have lost nothing really. For some photographs noise is a benefit too.

JamieL, while Mongoose is right in what he says think of it as more low ISO for still work and high levels of light and if you can get away with it elsewhere, higher ISO for movement and low light.

You also have the problem of depth of field, open the aperture and the depth in focus will shrink. In this sort of case it may be preferable to up the ISO rather than open the aperture.

Really though it works out as lower ISO = lower sensitivity to light : high ISO = higher sensitivity but may induce noise.

As with a lot of things there is a compromise.

quite right of course, I was being a little over simplistic
