Hugin - Create panoramas
on: June 08, 2006, 23:18:16 PM

Been learning to use Hugin and I have got some fairly good results.

Clickable - fast connections need only apply, 8821x1894!

Didnt do quite so well here, it looks a little bent.. not quite sure why at the moment, wasnt using a tripod for this one though...

Recommend the software, I must say. but its a monster, itll chew up all my 1GB of RAM and eat another gig of swap easily, and I dont do full-res pictures with it, my system cant handle them at all :(

Im half tempted to order another GB, if I get serious about this sort of thing

On the right side of the bottom image there are two visible seams in the powerline. Otherwise its very nice.

Ive done them by hand, and its not all that hard, but it takes a loooooong time. Impossible with fully automatic cameras though, as theyll adjust the exposure for each pic.

Heres one of mine, and, meh, I couldnt be arsed to fix the sky seam. I got the sidewalk pretty decent tho:

those are pretty impressive snellgrove, even in the high rez one of the forst pic you cant see the join !

and the only thing i can see in the 2nd one is the power lines :)

Yeah, it does a pretty good job of it.

but it eats your PC alive while it does all the maths though! but I think the end result is worth it :)

I want to do a really big 360 degree one at some point, Maybe do that tonight - theres a scenic place nearby which I have in mind :)

Looks good Max, shame you cba with that sky join  Wouldnt be able to tell otherwise, the exposures are nicely matched :) - I take it you also make Hugin use Enblend to softly blend all the joins together?

you use autopano-sift to get the control points.

Input the control points into hugin.

Output "enblend tiffs"

input tiffs into enblend.

then wait while enblend merges it all together :)

I have 1.5gb ram and Hugin was working with 5 full res images. Had no issues here, sure it did have to think for 10 or so minutes when doing it but it was fast enough dont think it used swap.

Really tempted to get a 2nd GB of RAM!

I completely ran out last night - 13 images!

I have a serious design flaw in my Linux box, that I only allocated 1.4GB of swap, as I never thought id actually throw anything serious at it :P

If you are running out at 1GB it might be worth thinking of 4!

Just looked it up on crucial £532 for 2*2GB 3200 :(

Guess Im not going to be upgrading to that for a while.

Another 1GB in a stick, is like £50 for my ol beast..  PC2700 DDR

My main issue is that I currently have 3 slots, 2 occupied with 512 sticks running in duel channel mode

So if I add any more RAM I immediately lose Duel-Channel mode (probably no biggie really :P ) but I suppose the main problem I have, is if I want more than 2GB of RAM I need to consolidate those 2 sticks down to one as well as buying the extra RAM on top, so it gets expensive :(

I think Ill upgrade my whole PC eventually, as another limitation is the CPU (Currently have an Athlon 2600+)

Probably best just to hold out a while longer, for DDR2 to actually be an improvement over DDR and see what happens...   I wouldnt mind a greener PC (lower wattage and the like) which are just around the corner from Intel and AMD :) - I only need the horsepower for Hugin, and the odd game when I can get them to work  the other 75% of the time I dont need anything special at all.

Thats a myth mate.

Depends on your motherboard if anything. I have Dual channel with 1.5gb. 3x512mb sticks... means 2x512mb are dual channel and 1x512mb is just regular standard boring single channel.

Ah, so I wouldnt lose Duel Channel mode..  excellent,... I suppose :p

Tbh, I dont know what benefit it gives really, but I had 2x 512.. itd be stupid to use slot 1 and 2 when 3 was empty too!

Might give this a go then, if I feel the need!

I presume your running the usual "tekforum monkeys rig" which is the NF7-S + AthlonXP :D if thats the case I have an NF7-S v2 and its working like I mentioned above :)

Erm.. with superpi it makes about 5 seconds difference in my machine if I turn dual channel off.. or on. :)
