Being taught the art of flash and lighting, you never miss it, in broad daylight they used a reflector.
I all ways had a reflector on me, its perfect for shadows.

I *hate* flash and avoid it unless I absolutely have to use it. Get it wrong and instead of a nice photo you end up with a monster. Prefer natural lighting if at all possible.
Reflectors can be anything suitable, including cardboard, paper, cloth or whatever you can find, providing it is light.
